I was initially excited when I first heard about this. Checking the schedule, though, I was surprised to see they are attempting to cram in a new act every 20 minutes - 3 bands an hour! Even with sharing a backline, that barely leaves time for 2 or 3 songs each - and no time for special unannounced guests. Add to that the fact that the Bay Bridge is closed all weekend and traffic will likely be horrendous over the Golden Gate, this boy is staying in Oakland this Sunday. Bill, tgo |

" attempting to cram in a new act every 20 minutes - 3 bands an hour! ..." It would seem so: except that several of the "bands" share common members, and those are stacked into a double or triple play shifts, replacing a few on the fly as it were ... Dan Hicks seems to be in several alternating time frames throught the afternoon, however, which should keep him humpin' If you were at the Chet Helm's Memorial, the same kind of schedual was posted, but it came off quite nicely with very little "dead air" and a good time for all concerned, performers included. ... I'll let you know how it works out. (Chet & The Dog perfected this tight time line ... the beach house had two stages, one in prep while the other played. ... but the same can be done if the primary stage is roomy and no egos get thumped too badly.) " ... the Bay Bridge is closed all weekend and traffic will likely be horrendous over the Golden Gate ..." This has happened: the last time there was a bay bridge closure was the '89 earthquake ... for weeks. I had no trouble crossing the GG Bridge the day of the quake or the day after ... Sunday, busy Sunday is never as bad as a weekday. Wife and I will take our bikes in the van and park north of GG park ~ 34th ave. ... :>) |

Eddy: Have fun! My experience is that the Bay Bridge is worse on weekends than during rush hour. Add that to the already heavy GG traffic (and take away the increased ferry service they ran for the six weeks following the Loma Prieta Quake of '89 that the Bay Bridge was down), and you've got all the ingredients for "The Perfect Parking Lot". I think taking your bikes is the right idea. After going out of town the last three weekends, my wife and I will be nesting this time. I'm sure the show will be great. I'll wait for Phil & Friends at the Greek in Berkeley later this month. Bill, tgo |
