If I lived anywhere near, I would be there if for no other reason than to see that bass of yours! But I'm listening to the samples from the CD at the Rented Mule Jazz website right now and the music is really nice! The bass on "Double D" is especially nice! And there's a nice bit of bass solo on "Rest for the Weary" as well; I love that tone you can get from the extended range of the six string. And I love what you are doing with your solo on "Thelonius". And Wow - "Trout Sandwich"!! And the other guys can play too! Great stuff, and great bass!! |

Hi Dave! Glad you like the material, I've long enjoyed your work w. Montford Park and wish we were a bit closer so I could see you gig too!! The RM website MP3s were made from the unmastered final mixes, I edited in Peak LE4 to show snippets of the head and each soloist. MP3s elsewhere (snowcap, digistaion, itunes -when that goes live- and cdbaby) are from the final product and in more standard form. We really concentrated on the fidelity of the drums/percussion and horns when recording. The bass went direct in stereo (each PU got it's own track) from a DS5 mini clone to the board, with these settings (master vol is a bit low but Series output is pretty hot, pic was to be sure I changed nothing overnight): I made no tone/vol changes while recording (I'll want to be more adventurous tonally for the next recording ;) Chorus and compression were added during mixing, tone variations via PU 'blending' was done w. faders. We recorded it in less than 15 hours at Daoud Shaw's (drummer for SNL '75-'77, Van Morrison, Jerry Garcia and many more) Radioactive Productions and mastered by Allan Tucker @ Foothill Digital in NYC. We're thrilled by the result and came in on time and under budget. Joining us Thursday on Tenor and Soprano will be Jason O'Mara jason-omara.com/ and on Percussion will be Napoleon Black (Denise King, Jamaaladeen Tacuma). Thanks and Happy New Year! |
