I have been honored with an invitation to perform at an interesting last minute gig this Saturday (5/24/03) , 9:30 PM @ the Crossroads in Garwood, New Jersey. It will be a Hendrix / Redding Tribute. This got into the works due to Noel Redding's untimely departure. I plan to bring my Alembic 8 string, Stanly Clarke 6 string fretless and possiblly one other huge Alembic. I will be powered by a vintage all tube Fender 400 PS, souped up to nearly 500 RMS and four or six Euphonic VL110 cabs. Sorry, no effects on this gig, but we will shake up the place for sure.

Wew David.
That will shake the earth!
BTW: how is the Banjo in the back fitting in that Jimi/Redding thing?
I think I'll buy a Ukelele, it has 4 strings too!
LOL!
Nice!

Paul the bad one

Hiya Big bass, I notice you have a stanley clarke Six string bass. I have the short scale 4 string which being a guitarist really feels good to me.
I am thinking to go for one of these as my next Alembic when I have saved up enough gig money
:-). Anyway my question is, is yours a short scale bass and if so how does the low B floppy in feel under your fingers to play and how does the bass balance? I know mine is top heavy but I'm thinking about the extra weight of strings and hardware on the headstock and if it would make playing a little uncomfortable.

If not short scale what scale is it? and am i right in thinking that the longer scale would make it more headstrong?

Yes Paul, you are bad! That banjo is an original bass from the 1910's. It still has its original calf skin head. It is a 36" scale. I've never heard anything like it. I use it with this ragtime band I play with. I'm still looking for a bass uke! LOL! EEWWWW....that picture post is revealing!

Jazzyvee: Yes, mine is a schort scale. I believe I talked about the shortscale-6 string thing in a former posted message (archived under the general discussion area 4/20/03- titled "short scale/tuning"). Floppy "B" strings are the average. You have to find one the is high tension like some by DR or Ken Smith. I've had those KS strings on when I bought the bass. They have been boiled at least six times and still sound great!! At this point, I don't know what the model KS the string is. I have also minimized the floppiness by changing the 'angle of incline' of the string from the bridge to the tailpiece. I've made the angle steeper. You have to file the tailpiece down and also recut the slots making them deeper. That does it well....one tite axxed B.

Making the neck longer would make the bass neck heavy. I don't notice a heavy neck on my SC bass.

Is that a Walter Woods tossed in the pile?

Wow...I used to have a Fender 400PS...I thought I was the only one ever to use one...unfortunately, I didn't have an Alembic when I had the Fender...I think I was playing my old P-bass or a Charvel 3B at the time...

I built a lot of muscles lugging that thing around...but it did sound tasty...The xformer blew on it finally, and I couldn't talk myself into repairing it...you know, I can't remember what I did with it? Maybe I ought to go look in the garage...

Thanks for the trip down memory lane...

Yea Michael, the gig was fun & went well! Many guitarists were in attendance, interested in the Hendrix production. The club asked us back!! I guess that settles it!

David,

Glad to hear it went well. Still amazing how "Hendrix" can still pack 'em in. Nothing like a call back, too - bonus! Rock on.

Mike
