Coming up this week is that rarest of all shows, the "double gig". Pickled BEATS is opening for Noah Gabriel at Synergy II in West Chicago this Friday the 15th (I play in both bands). PB will do a one hour set, and then Noah's quartet finishes the night. Both bands have some new originals, along with a few covers. Synergy II is located on Route 38, Roosevelt Road about 1/2 mile west of route 59. The show starts around 9 ish and I'll be playing both of my Epics. This is my second show using TI jazz flats on my fretless. Wheee! Mike |

Howdy Doody Mon Frer Paul, Leave out the haircut and you've got me nailed. I play my fretted walnut Epic with PB, and the fretless maple Epic with Noah. I sweat like a frosty beverage in August on stage, so I always bring (and use) four shirts, two wrist bands, and two towels to every gig. (This is why I never want to resell or trade my basses - they're USED!) Shaving is a summertime hobby that takes a break every September through March. Hey Keith, Nope, no stage at Old Town Pub. Seating for maybe 50 with standing room for another 20-30. It's a pretty prototypical storefront bar with two alcoves with nearly floor to ceiling windows on either side of the entrance door. The drummer and I took up one alcove (facing away from the street) and Noah and Gary set up along the outer wall next to us. The PA had one cab next to Gary and the 2nd cab in the other alcove, shooting down the length of the room. There were stairs leading down, but those did not get used all night that I saw. The bar has one unisex bathroom, so I changed shirts out in my car. This was still a fair gig with a friendly crowd. This Friday's gig at Synergy is a complete turnaround in terms of accomodations. Synergy is a rockin room with 4 foot high stage, about 20,000 watts of PA with multiple "sub" bins and flying mids/highs, two bars, seating for about 200 and standing room for twice that. We even have (gasp!) a DRESSING ROOM. This will be my second time playing there. Mike |

I knew a guy years ago in Boulder, CO that was in two bands. Actually all the members were in both bands. Each member played different instruments in the different bands. My friend played bass in the bluegrass band and banjo (I think) in the country band. They changed clothes and wore hats and sunglasses. The country band was the opening act for the bluegrass band. The audience wasn't fooled. They had quite a following. It just made for a more fun show. Rich |

And now for a change of pace, I'm using the Pickled BEATS thread to promote ... a Pickled BEATS gig! PB will play this Saturday Aug. 6 in the beer garden at O'Briens Pub & Grill in Batavia. We start about 9 pm, and we have always had good shows here. I'll have the Epic contingent on hand. Come on out for dinner and fun! (Geez, just like Drew Carey) Mike |

Now back to our regularly scheduled distraction. It turns out the top act cancelled, so the Noah Gabriel Band is playing at Chord On Blues in St. Charles IL this Friday Aug. 5. We'll start at 10 in this fine venue. There is a $5 cover. So this will be a double dip weekend. Yipee! Mike |

Mike, In the mid "70s I played at a Denver club called The Horny Toad. I guess The Satisfied Frog sounds a little better. Have a good gig. Rich (Message edited by richbass939 on August 10, 2005) |

This Saturday, Aug. 20th The Noah Gabriel Band is doing an opening set at Walter Payton's Roundhouse for "Crash" (a Dave Matthews tribute band) at 9 pm. I'm not sure if this gig is inside the bar or outside in the gazebo (!?!) The Roundhouse is on route 25 in Aurora, IL. Mike |

Hi bro's an d Sis' I've been away for some time from the club. Though I wanted to share this story. We had the visit of a US altosax plauer from LA over here: Adam Lerman from Adam's Music Store. He stayed for some days at our house and I decided to plan a jazz gig in my good ol' trusted Thomas Stapleton Pub. We just "jumped" completely blank minded and some Real-books in the pub together with my drummer nephew Joris and my old-time friend guitar-player Karl. Yours truly on bass. Well ...it was SOME evening. I was sweating and nervous but ...I think the (small) audience loved what they heard. I succeeded in juggling away my lack of jazz-experience and Adam conisered me a high qulified player with ...lack of confidence and "milage". Oh well ...THAT is something I can work on. I played Chi (the 5 string Rob Allen). Not bad but not an instrument to play on an old SWR SM 400. It sounds -if volume is needed- best with Tweak Peaks and the fine tweaking possibilities of the SF-2. Too bad Tweak Peak lost her head: the Dynacord Power Amp is sold (too heavy) and I will have to wait at least 3 years before I can afford a light decent power amp. But ...it was said as a musical experiment for us and a goodbye for our friend Adam and I think we succeeded both. Paul TOBO |

Hi Moder Dave, how is the house in the deep woods standing by?? Set list ...good question. I don't remember them all! Karl and Adam made some kind of set-list but ...lost the sheet the moment they stood on scene. So it was kind of "huh ...hoh ...let's play ....this ... that" Ohwmawgo-od!!! I remembered have played All Blues, Blue Bossa, Isn't She Lovely, Georgia, a ladysinger oiut the audience brought "Smile" with her, Freddie the Freeloader, some more bossa's ... anyway ...sweathy music for your truly unexperienced reader. Moder Dave ...you HAVE to do All Blues! Is it with the band I saw you with? ...well ...huhuhu ...on picture of course! It is a 3/4 beat and soooooooooooo fun to play! You can make it to a more heavier version or keep it quiet. If you are into soloing ...it is a fun piece to work on. A favourite!! Paul TOBO |

This Saturday the 24th, I'm playing at Synergy II in West Chicago with Petty Theft, a Tom Petty & classic rock cover band. I've been rehearsing with them for a couple of weeks, and I have some old friends and bandmates in the group, so it should be a fun night. We start at 10 pm, with three sets, and there is a $5 cover. "Petty Theft" !!!! I love it! One of the best tribute band names I've heard yet. Right up there with my current favorite, (name, not band), "AC/DShe" - an all girl AC/DC tribute band. Have a great gig! Bill, tgo |

Wanted to semi-hijack the thread to say the best all-girl tribute band ever is the Iron Maidens. They're from SoCal, but played here in NYC and killed it note for note. This 5'2" girl "Stevie Heiress" nailing those Harris riffs that have befuddled me for 15 years. They're great if anyone ever has a chance. They've gotten big enough that they've had Lemme and others on as guests. They have the whole show down pat. I haven't been to Chicago in a long time, but next time I do I'll be sure to see if the Pickled Beats are playing, seems like you are almost every weekend, or at least every other. That's cool. -Jack |

Pickled BEATS is part of a double bill on Saturday, September 30th at Synergy Entertainment Complex on Roosevelt Rd. in West Chicago. Synergy is a good room with a large stage, pro loghts, and an excellent house sound system. We'll be on from 9:30 to 11 doing originals and some covers, then Petty Theft will finish out the night. I'll be using my fretted and fretless Epics as usual. Contact the club at: (630) 231-6000 for cover charge. Mike |

Update for tonight... I've decided to bring out my '81 Distillate to the Synergy show instead of my walnut fretted Epic. The bigger stage and especially proper stage lighting will make this a valid choice. Besides, I haven't gigged this bass since I put the FretFX leds on the walnut Epic. I will also have my maple fretless Epic along for the Dark Side hunk we do. Mike |
