Graeme,
Thanks for the kind wishes on behalf of Adriana and the rest of us. Have a great gig, yourself! I was in Scotland in May (split time between Bowmore and Rothes). You have an exquisitely beautiful country full of warm and friendly people. Next time I'm there I'd like to look you up; please feel free to do likewise.

Graeme, we had a fun gig. We only played for an hour and had to hit the ground running without a warm up or sound check. Very exhilarating, to say the least. The Crest LT-1500 in my rack is having issues with the power switch, so I swapped it out for a borrowed Stewart PA1000 amp. I had just gotten my bass back that day from a setup tweak and string change performed by SF Guitarworks. (They took this shot of her in the case.)

So, with new strings and a different sounding amp than usual, it took awhile to dial in just the tone I wanted, but by the 2nd song I got everything settled down: punchy without being harsh; bassy with just enough trebly bite. Since we played at the very beginning of the program, the hall didn't fill up until we were long finished. But the folks who were there early enough to see us got an earful!

Sounds like you had an 'interesting' gig Sam ;-)
Beautiful bass - I love the tailpiece and that top is one of the nicest I've seen.

Thanks, Graeme. I'm going to have to make a chart with several possible tone settings (I've got 3-way Q switches, too) and record snippets so I can analyze what sound is really the best for me. In combination with my F1-X there are SO many possibilities and I frequently stumble upon something I like but then later on can't duplicate the sound.

The Signature bass in your profile pic is gorgeous. Care to share your favorite tone settings?

Sam - For probably 75 - 80% of my playing on the MK, (looking directly at the bass from in front) I have the pan at 1 o'clock i.e. slightly favouring the neck pup, both filters at around 3 o'clock and both Q switches on. For numbers that require less aggression it's usually just a case of flicking the Qs off and maybe rolling the bridge filter back to 1 o'clock. very occasionally, I may need to add some bite to the standard tone so all I do is roll the pan round to 11 o'clock and add some bridge filter. It's worth mentioning that we're a rock covers band but we're playing some pretty modern stuff - killers, Muse, the enemy - as well as older classics from the stones, beatles, bad company etc, so it's nice having a bass that'll cope with just about any tone needed with minimal 'tweaking'. Sadly we don't pay any funk so I don't need a slap tone but that's probably the 'basic' tone of the instrument;-)
Another point to make is that my amp set up now colours the tone anyway. I'm running 2 preamps into a stereo power amp into a pair of identical EBS 2x12 cabinets. I was at one point trying to get a distorted tone using a footswitch but all the pedals I tried were too buzzy so I've invested in an ampeg SVP to give one channel some drive when it's required - it's also tightened the tone up to be more punchy, prior to getting the SVP I was running both channels from a fender tbp preamp which is great for getting a nice phat bottom end but struggles to cope with the upper register.
A picture (so they say) is worth a thousand words...
amp latest

Hopefully I'll get to california in a couple of years (big birthday trip) so maybe we'll get the chance to meet up. Once I've finalised my arangements i'm going to convince bill panzer he should organise another Alembic get together;-) Visiting the workshop is no.1. on my list.

Hey, Sam
there's no problem for sharing pics of "Ambre", my Alembic bass. You can see some pictures in the showcase section, in this topic "MK sig Deluxe 5 string" ( I think it is the 7th or 8th topic of the section), and also in the "Alembic basses and guitars" section, in the topic called "funky wedding".
All the bass't!.. :-)

Thanks so much for your message!!! It's really cool.
I have to say that your bass also is one my favourite, in terms of shape. It sounds real good, too, and I confess that if there are basses with this shape and series II electronic, it would be my holy graal!!!
About the funky wedding topic, one of my friend has made a video of the jam session that happened during this day. I'll try to share it here, just in case... :-)
Xtof
