Valentino has been dying to get this burl cut up ever since he joined us. We finally had a moment to start unleashing the wood that is Bing Burl:

badaBING!
Our Coco Bolo supplier found this on his travels through Indonesia. It was described as Bing Burl, and I really don't know much more about it other than the fact that it is GORGEOUS. It resembles Amboyna very much, except the color is a dark red.

Hey, that's what I was thinking, Dave! Is it priced like Amboyna, or maybe a little more because of the rarity?

It's the same as Amboyna, so no need to make it more for rarity
's sake since we paid about the same for it.

Burls are hard to identify, but I will still prepared a slide of this and see if the cell structure doesn't give me any additional clues.

WOW!!!
It seems you can have a top that looks like sunrays around the PU's!
Something I would like for my dream. I still want to use only one (1) pickup in bookmatch to center with this wood.

Paul the bad one

I'm just wondering how large the piece is. Is it large enough for a book matched Europa body? It would be nice to see it with a little acetone.

I did a search on Bing tree and all that showed up was Cherry (refered as Bing tree but explained as cherry). One article went further to suggest that the species originated in Asia. So might be cherry or some relative.

Mica,
Besides the size of the piece do you know when we might be able to see the cut blanks? I am thinking of ordering a fretless sometime in late summer early fall and I do like the pattern of this wood.

Hello Keith,

the piece is not very big, unfortunately.
It looks like only Stanley type bodies and Furthers, Skylarks & Darlings are small enough to fit.
A Tribute might be possible too, but that would double the cost of the wood because we'd have to cut a double thick piece for it.
Bookmatch to center is not likely, but we'd have to see on a case by case basis.

A recent discussion identified the Darling model as Jonathan's Little Bear, which I believe is this custom guitar here.

Thanks, Dave. So it's basically a Balance-K style
guitar. Very nice! I sent the link to a guitar-playing friend and he said the proportions are almost like a bass as far as neck-to-body goes.
