Nope, sorry I am not living London for Santa Rosa I am leaving the forum and wish a Merry Christmas to everyone in advance, this is my last post. I am fine really, it's time for me to go, and as I have been active lately, I though it would be normal to make my depart "official", so no one would wonder why I never came back... As usual, I tried to help the best I could when I was able to, brought some jokes, got "angry" when needed to... You don't have to worry about me, if you really want to say something, do not send me an email, just visit my website and follow the link(s) Now, go an find yourself ;) Gino |

Sorry Keavin; While that was a visually creative expression of your feelings and certainly an understandable response, I thought it a bit too over the top in the context of the group dynamic. I hope you don't mind my editing your post in that light. |

Adriaan; you didn't miss anything, it wasn't a picture, just text. And it was something I would normally have addressed in a private email, these circumstances being a bit extraordinary. Jordan; Only he can answer that. But my guess might be, as is frequently the case with all of us, that it was an emotional reaction to environmental factors as perceived in one's mind at a certain point in time within the greater context of the flow of events within one's life. LG indicated at one point that he was only reading threads that he had started; so it would appear to be that his experience of the group dynamic was limited to just a few threads and to discussions that he himself had initiated. When viewed within the context of the tenor of discussion of the group threads taken as a whole, the discourse of these few threads can be seen to be a bit out of the ordinary. When viewed within the scope of the posting guidelines, and again therein within context of the group as a whole, these threads can be seen by some at times as a bit problematic. It is difficult to point to any one or two posts or threads, but from my perspective as moderator, a troublesome dynamic had been unfolding and I was concerned for the group as a whole, for the members individually, and for LG. I felt, again in my role as moderator, compelled to respond to the flow of events, as I perceived them to be unfolding, with my post #4595 in this thread. Immediately after that, and again responding to events as they were unfolding, I felt compelled to write my post #4596 in this thread. However, it was after my first post and before my second post that LG posted his "leaving" message. I suppose it could be reasonably presumed that within the context of events as LG perceived them, my first post may have been influential in his decision to leave. It was not my intention to cause him to leave. Indeed, I perceive my path as one of helping people, of learning how to help people, of not harming others, and learning how to not harm others, to the best of my limited abilities given where I am at this point in time. I think one could read back through all of LG's posts, and the threads within which they were posted, and perhaps conclude that I did not act appropriately or did not act with sufficient skill. However, I acted within the context of my perceptions of events and to the extent of my ability given where I was at that particular point in time. It is worrisome when members leave under such circumstances. It hasn't happened often. Indeed, events similar to these have been very rare. We don't know what may be happening in someone's life apart from information posted in various threads. We don't know if someone is facing significant health problems, economic problems, family problems, etc. All of us suffer; yet none of us can know the extent to which others suffer. Given that, this forum should be a place of refuge; a place where people can come and exchange ideas in a safe and warm environment. So when someone leaves this place in circumstances such as these, I find it a bit worrisome. I don't want this place to cause people any more suffering than they are already experiencing in life. Well the phone rang and I lost my train of thought, which is probably a good thing! I hope this addresses your question to some relatively sufficient degree. |

Dave, can I just say that I think that you are an excellent moderator and handled this situation very well. Personally, I think that this resolved itself as best it could under the circumstances. I wasn't involved in the major blow-out threads that popped up recently, but did feel the sting of the one who left. I was very angry, but realized that no words could fix the situation, and so kept my mouth shut - something I wish I had done when I made my initial post! Again, thank you for the excellent job you do moderating, as well as the knowledge you impart on top of that. |

Trust Me LG lives on in spirit. And email. There was no one person or reason he pulled the pin. He couldn't get everything he needed, had expressed himself in a manner others objected to and he pulled the pin. When he regains composure he may be back. Dave.. you said it right! Several times. You do an excellent job, and are human. So continue to make the best desicion possible, with the information you have available. Thank you for moderating! *hug* And, good luck LG! I never understood why people would delete their profiles when deciding not to participate in the forum anymore. They could just not participate, if they'd wish, it wouldn't make a difference. They don't have to post or even visit the forum just because they have a leftover profile. They wouldn't even need to tell anybody that they don't visit. Which brings me to the conclusion that people doing this are more after making a statement and want to be heard, not so much after the actual act of leaving. After all, even without a profile they still can and probably do visit the forum and read the threads. By doing so they may be very satisfied to find out that they eventually evoked a reaction whereas earlier they may have felt like fighting windmills. Psychologically, this is an interesting phenomenon. Hartmut |

Harmut, I once belonged to a forum that I no longer visit. I didn't make any announcements, or delete my profile. I simply decided that there were differences between me and some of the other forum members that could not be breached, and that I did not like the argumentative mood that it put me in. I have a hard time imagining someone making a statement like this, and not at least checking in to see how people reacted. A very interesting phenomenon indeed . . . |

Because of that, like souls are drawn here making this one of the most pleasant forums on the net. On my initial exposure to this forum I was sure you worked for Alembic as you accurately reflect the Alembic character and class As the drama unfolded I began to mass troops along the border. Then as usual you brokered a diplomatic solution. Well done sir! |

It is amazing to me how pompus this club has become. If someone wants to leave and make a lot of noise about it for whatever reason, that is their business. If they want to delete their profile to make a statement that is their business. If they choose to go away quietly that is their business. If they choose to come back and participate that is their business. If they only choose to read quietly in the shadows that is their business. You guys sit around like a bunch of old ladies waiting for someone to slip up in your opionion so that you can make disparaging remarks and feel better about yourselves. That is not a real Alembic, Where I buy my Alembic is nicer than where you get yours, My ebony lams and 15 strings are better than your four string whatchamajig! It is funny that you are doing exactly what you have accused someone else of doing. Which brings me to the conclusion that people doing this are more after making a statement and want to be heard! Isn't that why we all are here? Whatever happened to the Alembic site that was all forgiving and none judging? I guess all good things must come to an end! Rory |

quote: "It is amazing to me how pompus this club has become." No, but it is annoying to see such a claim offered without evidence. quote: "If someone wants to leave and make a lot of noise about it for whatever reason, that is their business. If they want to delete their profile to make a statement that is their business. If they choose to go away quietly that is their business. If they choose to come back and participate that is their business. If they only choose to read quietly in the shadows that is their business." True. And if club members want to discuss the behavior -especially the obnoxious, offensive, and out-of-line behavior of such a person, that is also, by the same token, their business as well, ISN'T IT? quote: "You guys sit around like a bunch of old ladies waiting for someone to slip up in your opionion so that you can make disparaging remarks and feel better about yourselves." Wow. That's quite a statement. Who are "you guys?" I haven't seen any evidence of this... certainly not enough to support such a generalization. Evidence? Examples? Seems to me a fella should provide such if he's gonna put other people down... if he's gonna make DISPARAGING REMARKS. Who precisely is "putting others down to feel good about himself?" quote: "That is not a real Alembic, Where I buy my Alembic is nicer than where you get yours, My ebony lams and 15 strings are better than your four string whatchamajig!" Who or what is this describing? I don't see any evidence of this, period -much less enough to support a sweeping, DISPARAGING generalization. quote: "It is funny that you are doing exactly what you have accused someone else of doing." Again, who is "you", and what specific examples of this alleged hypocrisy can you point to, to support this DISPARAGING generalization? quote: "Which brings me to the conclusion that people doing this are more after making a statement and want to be heard! Isn't that why we all are here?" You lost me. But then I didn't see any reasoning to follow in the first place -to form the "conclusion." quote: "Whatever happened to the Alembic site that was all forgiving and none judging?" What a package-deal! Some people MAY deserve to be forgiven; some people clearly do not. It depends on the specifics. And if you feel that judging is bad... THAN WHY ARE YOU DOING IT? quote: "I guess all good things must come to an end!" Non-sequitur. The funny thing is that, if I attempt to play "Devil's Advocate", the best and only example I can find to support your generalization regarding pompousness, disparaging remarks, and putting other people down to feel good about one's self... is YOUR post. Funny, huh? |

I'm just tired of seeing people keep talking about how David did a good job. I think I'm missing something. What did LG do offensively? This is a small forum, so exits are acceptable. Now I'm on a large forum quite often, www.pbnation.com. 15th largest forum with usually over 2500 members on at a time. On a forum like that, you don't see that, or the typical response would be "go drink bleach". (Message edited by j.saylor on December 15, 2006) |

Jordon, if you read the "midrange" thread LG started, and see the tone he takes and comments he makes towards club members, it should be self-evident why people were offended. It starts out civilized... but as it goes on... well, if you read it, and his other rambling threads that explicitly insult people... it should be clear. Dave exhibited unusual sensitivity and diplomacy in the situation -IMO. |

It's not the same club as when I first posted almost four years ago. Not better, not worse, just different. As people come and go so goes the club's personality. The main reason I began to participate is directly attributed to the behavior and personalitites of certain members, members that have become infrequent visitors, by the way. The fact that the moderators have the authority and access to modify/delete postings ought to tell everyone that there is an accepted/understood baseline to adhere to. Rory's point is valid. A fence, however benevolent and politely constructed is still a fence. A periodic, introspective accounting is worthwhile. Guilty as charged. Mike |

I sat this one out so far, but it's getting too good. As far as LG goes, he represented himself as unusually needy and demanding relative to the typical club member. To me, that's a combination that can create bad feelings. I thought Mica went way beyond the call of duty to assist him in putting together a bunch of second-hand parts into a configuration for which they weren't designed. It is what it is. |

Personally I didn't appreciate a relative newby who didn't even own an Alembic putting me down because I didn't jump to download his player. My two impressions of the entire situation: 1. LG was inappropriately negative/confrontational; 2. The members, led by our own imitable modder Dave, for the most part responded with admirable restraint and class. I think the subsequent "hey, I missed it, what happened?" posts may actually be creating more waves than the original storm. All I am saying is give peas a chance. Interesting thread, to say the least. I'll keep it brief. Online forums in many ways lend themselves to individuals never meeting each other. Sure, one party may say something that may offend another, but as I see it, why should I care what one person says in an online forum that will cause me no physical harm? As for the mental harm, I can just ignore whoever it is that is allegedly insulting or offensive. It's as simple as that. LG left. He left because he wanted to. If he wants to come back, he can. I'm not going to lose sleep over it. In fact, I'm going to use the time to practice. Beats contemplating why someone I've never met left a forum, even one as great as this. My two cents, Alan |
