Fellow NC Alembicians,

I have returned from the land of the Morning Calm (the Republic of Korea) as of 23 June 07. As I recall, we were going to wait until I came home (thanks for that - totally unnecessary but greatly appreciated nonetheless) to do it at Showmaker Music in Burlington. A Saturday I believe is what was decided on. I'm still game if everyone else is. Thoughts?

I should be home most weekends, so I should be able to make just about any weekend for the most part, with the exception of the weekend of 16-20 August (I'll be on a houseboat trip).

For reference, the previous thread is here.

Chuck is the person who originally contacted Shomakers.

In the original thread, Adam said he wanted to make it. His schedule is here. They are in Louisianna on 7/21. His band works pretty much every weekend. Interestingly, he and I are playing one block apart from each other this Saturday. Of course his crowd will be about 10 times larger than mine!

This Saturday's show has actually been moved to Thurs. July 26th. This Saturday is my last one off for a while so no need to wait on me. Go ahead and make plans to suit everybody's schedule and I'll just have to see pics of this one as well.
Where are you playing Dave? Also thanks for remembering me. Take care guys and enjoy!!

We're playing at Ed Boudreaux's. If you leave the Orange Peel and head up Biltmore, it's at the next light on the right, right beside Barley's Tavern.

A Sunday would be better for me but the way things roll for me and my band..scheduling other activities outside of it are very hard, especially on weekends. Again thanks for wanting to include me but I will probably not be able to make it. Enjoy and I'll be looking forward to pics.

I am game for just about anything, so a Saturday or a Sunday would work for me. We could also schedule a couple gatherings I guess if need be to accomodate differing schedules. Thoughts?

Generally Saturday would be better for me. My band typically rehearses on Sundays. If Burlington is too far east I'm open to going further west.

Chuck hasn't chimed in yet, though. Shomaker's in Burlington is fine with me and I am going to keep 7/21 open also. Let's decide.

Are we agreed for 21st at Shomaker's? Or is another date more appropriate? As I said, I'm flexible if there are some whose schedules conflict with the 21st. Thoughts?

I'm OK with the 21st at Shomaker's. I'm flexible till the middle of August, then we have to take my daughter back to WCU and my wife starts back teaching and everything gets chaotic.

I've put it on my calendar.

So, it looks like 4 or 5 attendees. It seems to be that there are other members from NC & SC that don't check in often, so if you think of anyone else, search for their profile and send them an email.

Chuck;
In addition to directions, and the hours that we will be allowed to "take over" the store, I would like to know if we can bring our own rigs.

Also, it suddenly occurs to me, that I'm not sure how comfortable I am with a store full of people I don't know who are not members of this club milling around too close to our basses and rigs.

I'm not sure I want to spend seven hours in my car, plus all the set up, tear down, load in, load out associated with a gig, to hear a bunch of people I don't know say "Hey man, can I play your bass".

I'm spending seven hours in my car to meet my Alembic club friends and to play my bass.

And what happens when some guitar player walks into the store and wants to try out the Marshall stack across the room from us to see how it sounds when it's cranked?

And then there's the fact that I like to turn up loud enough to hear myself over the drummer.

In other words, I think there need to be some kind of ground rules. I don't know anything about Shomaker's, and they may have experience hosting events of this type and may know what to do. So when you talk to them, if you don't mind, express these concerns and get a feel for what's going to happen.

I don't mean to be negative, I just want this to be a positive experience for all of us and for the store and its patrons.

Oh, and we'll need a pretty good drummer!

Message received and understood Dave.Nothing is chiseled in stone at this time. I am open to an alternate location and understand your concerns.
Showmakers is sort of small if we bring drums and several stacks.I will talk to them about it.Also if anyone knows of a good alternate location center state please jump in.

Chuck; at this point Shomaker's may be the best location. And upon further reflection, I believe that I wasn't really thinking this through and that my expectations were perhaps unrealistic. If we're just bringing instruments with no rigs, and playing through what they have in the store, I don't see why that shouldn't be fine. I think the important point is that we are getting together. So talk to them and let us know what you think. Oh, and I do appreciate your taking the lead on this. Thanks!

A lot of my previous residences had trailer hitches on one end and wheels underneath; so instead of folks having to drive to my house, I could've pulled my house and set it down in the middle of the state. But I looked, and this house don't have a hitch.

Folks,

My place is always an option as well - Keith has been here already, and I can always BBQ something. I have a 600 lb BBQ cooker in my backyard, so that could be part of it if we went with my place. The downside is I'm probably quite a bit away from most of you, so Shomaker's is probably a better option for most of us. I can always bring my Phil Jones Briefcase and my Ampeg BA-115 for amps. They're relatively small (especially the briefcase) and would give us something to use if Shomaker's can't support with amps (which is cool, I can understand it if they can't). Like Dave, my only trepidation is someone other than a club member wanting to pick up one of my Alembics to try it. I don't mind a club member doing it, but I'm always a bit timid at letting someone I don't know try it given the investment in dollars. We'll see, I guess.

Again, my place is an option, though I'm sure not the only one.

Dave: Steve Martin pulled that off once. in "The Jerk" He hooked up that car to the water spigot on the side of the church. The car pulled half of the church away. If you've got a SUV, it shouldn't be a problem. Right?!?!?

Be back with you tomorrow after I talk to Kim Shomaker as to what gear he may have on hand that we can use.I have a Fender 60 bxr that I haul around when I don't want to haul my big stack. It's 60 watts digital with 1-15".If we don't need it it can stay in the truck. We will have to bring folding chair or stool if you want one.

Chuck,

I'm good with the timing, and I can also be there at 1230 if you need me to. My wife has a high speed camera (a Sony that cost damn near $1K) and can take some good pics for us if needed. Sounds like the amplification is taken care of. I'm truly looking forward to meeting everyone and trying out some amazing instruments, and sharing mine with fellow Alembicians.

Best regards,

Mike,

I should think that cables, a stand or two, etc. would be appropriate. I may bring a multi-effects unit (Boss GT-6B) as well, but I'm not planning on bringing an amp (well, I may bring my Phil Jones Briefcase, but thats about it). As I understand it Shomaker's has some Ampeg stuff for us to play through, so I don't think amps are absolutely necessary.

Rest assured I will be keeping an eagle eye on my stuff! ;-) I may have to leave the Dragon's Wing at home - at present it is unplayable (see my thread in the Troubleshooting part of the club). All the others are going with me.

I will be bringing a cooler of ice and a small amp in case someone needs it.Also some drinks.
I have a GT-6B as well that I'm having trouble learning how to use.Maybe Alan could give me a few pointers.Alan maybe you could bring the DW anyway. The Shomakers have a good reputation in this area and I sure would like to see one.

I'll bring the DW. If the Shomakers can get it to play, I'd be eternally grateful.

Chuck, I'll show you what I know about the GT-6B. I'm still learning how to use it myself.

I'll try to get there about 1230 to meet Chuck and get things rolling.
