Anyone else use these? I just put a set on my SCSD and the results are less than stellar. |

I have the red ones on my Orion. Not as bright as the standard DR's, but I like them. http://alembic.com/club/messages/411/34209.html?1165938896 |

I have Blacks on my MK sig, Reds on my rogue fretlass and Blues on my epic. I absolutely love them. About the only thing I could complain about is that the coloured coating around the picking area is coming off but it's barely noticeable, even after a few months of hard playing. I just wish they were a bit cheaper on this side of the pond. Graeme |

I tried them and didn't like them. They had a dead (not the good Dead either!) tone that sounded thin even for their relatively light weight. There was another thread on elixirs and I tried a set of those a few years back as well. They were better, though maybe a little hollow sounding. I don't remember which Elixirs I tried, but they sounded like a hex core string to me. I greatly preferred the tone over the DR coated strings, though. |

I use Black Beauties on my Modulus Q5 exclusively now. I used to use Black Diamonds but the DRs sound as good and are a little less expensive. I would agree with the other posts here - they are a little less bright however it depends on what bass and set up you are using. My Modulus has (of course) a graphite neck and phenolic fingerboard - both translate detail very well. Plus my setup is geared around growl and punch so the Black Beauties do very well. So it really depends on your setup and what kind of sound you like. FYI - I'd never put these on the '83 Series II however... |

I started using them on my Roscoe fretless. Liked them so much I added them to my Series II 5-string and my Devon 5-string. |

I just got my first set of D'Addario flatwounds and was very impressed. They advertise them as having a very "mellow" tone, and that's an understatement. You won't want them for every application, much more thud than high end. But lots of heft and they feel great under the fingers. I've got them on my Modulus 5-string, so no problem with reduced definition, but YMMV. and the 0.132 low B string is huge. |

I have Black Beauties on my Stingray 5. I like them well enough. I wouldn't put them on my Alembics. Not enough high end bite to them. |

Funny how our ears hear things so differently. I love DR Hi-Beams on Alembic basses, but I have Low-Riders on one of mine and can't wait until they're dead enough to get rid of. My six-string wears D'Addario XLs and they work great with the throaty tone of that bass. The D'Addario Chromes I didn't like at all...I could only hear trebly attack and no thump. My old, dead TI Flats are all thump which you wouldn't expect from such skinny strings. |
