We started very small:
20 strings,
30 fingers,
4 Alembics,
3 fanatic bass players,
13 speakers,
1 fine bottle of Alsace Gewurztraminer
and some strong Italian espresso…

Here are the pics form our first Belgian meeting of Alembic fans on the second of december, it won't take long for Paul TBO to write down some beautiful proza about the evening :-)

Enjoy !

That must have been paradise! I hope you have good contacts with your neighbours.... With all those amps, there must have been a little earthquake. Very nice collection of basses, I still like that EeeveeeeHuuuu bass. It has a very 'female' touch....

That looks like a good time for sure. What a room full of gear! The EVH is very nice. I've not seen/heard one of those in person. You even had one of those metronome things.

Ahem ...
Once it was that 3 fierce riders of the low frequencies set to Hofstade ...huh ....no ....

For one or another reason that doesn't sound appropriate ...that "Hofstade".

Well what can I say?

Spyder Ollie ...I'm sorry ...I forget about it. Arriving at Jan (Brother Jan the River one) 's place I recalled " ^&^&^*$-))><!?!?!?! I had to ask Spyder Ollie too ..." WITH the Spyder's of course but ...well let's say this was an real ABC meeting.

(For those who didn't follow my regular wabble the last year-and-half: ABC stands for Alembic Belgian Chapter. Brother Paul the fake one -somteimes he calls himself DIno, refers in his reaction to the planned meeting of the ANEC, the Alembic New England Chapter. Alas that meeting will always be postponed for beer-reasons. Given the fact that "anec" means "rabbit" in catalan ...when will you ever see a drunk rabbit play bass ... huh?!??! One of those rabbits is an amateur BREWER for crying out loud ...and even worse ...he hates nylon stockings ...excpet on senior management who is enchanting BTW).

Well .

3 bassplayers.

Brothers and sisters....it was great.

Paul tbo (yours sincerely) is of the lazy "bom" type which is no-good in only bass-playing situations. I have a Jazz and blues practice.
Jan the River one is a very sweet melodical player
coming from one of Belgians "hottest" cover bands.
Steven the Prince one is ...well ... kinda ...kattachikattachikattachi-ploiiiiiiiong-ci-toumb-citounbcitoumb...grittygrittygritty-plonk. Funky as you can get ...a walking rhythm-box and plying with hand and feet.

(Brother Ja, BTW ...you forgot to mention the two feet of Steven).

3 characters, 3 techniques, 3 completely different actions on the neck. Bonnie seemed to have an very low action (thanks again brother Joey) what made her difficult to play for the others. Marylin is Soooooooooooooooooooooooooo sexy. Gosh!
There were tone differences between Bonnie and Marylin, not much of a weight difference.
Marilyn had a slightly more hiss.

There is not much to show off for "bom"players so don't believe the picture Jan took me holding Bonnie on that awkward way.
I learned a lot from Jan and Steven.

Tweak Peaks was partially tested. We didn't A/B with the Goliath's III. I know Glock are very "clean". I managed to make a nice sound however for Steven when he was takkatakkatakkatakkatakkatakka-ing his way over the neck.
Can you imagine: he played mandolin for us via that foot-thing!!

Anyway!

Thou brothers and sisters alover the world!
Gather!

David,

Can I join? Can I, can I? I know I'm in Texas, but the last name is "Moore". Come to think of it, maybe you're in my town? :-)

To the ABC: Way to go! Do it again and get the rest of the AE(uropean)C involved!

That's the plan Mike, that' s the plan.
Now it were only 3 players, playing Alembic + having a computer + internet + speaking/writing US lingo + with a mind open to other people and players + a kind of "show-off" style to be in this club (well ...a tiny bit ...no?? ...just a eeny-teeny-weeny bit???)
Anyway ...let it grow ...let it grow

Paul TBO,
you know the classic WHO line: you are forgiven...
Don´t mind about this.
I hope that we will find a fitting date soon so that we all can meet again...
And as for the Frankfurt Music Fair:
who will come to there so that we can meet?
The Frankfurt Music Fair will be from Wednesday 31st of March 2004 to Saturday April 3rd 2004.
I think I will be there all the time; so let´s meet there!!

Well guys, what can I say? Bass nirvana! The EVH is v cool, but Bonnie and Marilyn (I take it Jan settled on "Marilyn" then?).....wow. Looks like you had a fun time! Just one thing; how on earth am I supposed to decide on whether to have walnut or maple facings after seeing those 2 incredible basses together? Just when I thought I had it sorted....!

All the best

Yes ...about that wood of Bonnie.
It IS -according to Mica- dark walnut. It is a californian member of that wood family that she called "Clarowood". A the brothers pointed out that there is even some spalting in that capping, tints of red, darkbrown near black and tints of olive green.
Jan and Steven also found the sound different as Marylin (BTW I don't think Jan is set for that name but I definitely am ...gosh ...what a gal...what a gal ...what a gal). What precisily ..I dunno. I have dumb ears.

That world chapter thing (the AWS -home idea) is stille spooking through my head but I am in some profesisonal mess right now so I have to figure some thinsg out first.

ANEC, MAC ...don't forget the drinks!

Oh ...another thing, we all experienced that evening how handy (that's the good word) it is to have that "third hand": Steven going bobbediboddedibobbedibobbedibobbedi (no not you Bob) for some time and in the mean time Jan on Tweak Peaks ....big fun and great sound shaping in the make!

Paul the bad one

I have stop this proza ...Jan ...Steven ...help ...say something!!?!?!?!
Jan?!??!?!

Well, well, what a response :-)

For those who are interested, the specific gear used that evening can be seen in more detail in the showcase

Bonnie : http://alembic.com/club/messages/411/2475.html?1069161968
Marylin (I guess I will have to settle with that name): http://alembic.com/club/messages/411/6742.html?1070468702
EVH Signature 5: http://alembic.com/club/messages/411/479.html?1022771206
EVH Signature 4: http://alembic.com/club/messages/411/483.html?1031725415
Tweak Peaks: http://alembic.com/club/messages/394/6134.html?1069586402

I have a small feeling we might have inspired some of you to organize something like this in your area? Maybe one day someone will see it even bigger and organises something worldwide?

Shaun, I can completely understand you are really confused now! In your case, I would also have a terrible time choosing between the Quilted Maple, Coco Bolo, and The Clarowood Walnut. I really like Bonnies top, it’s an incredible figured top that you don’t see that often. So, why don’t you have a combination of the two ? Maple top or back and Walnut top or back?

Cheers

I was always saying.....gosh......what an amount of money that is gathered here......
We had a ball in a very nice atmosphere.
I'm going to check out on an Mark King Deluxe made in about 1990/1991 in a big music store here in Belgium.
Wish me luck guys :-)

Hi Jan!

With regards to the wood question, I had originally considered having the top as one wood and the back as another, but I think I'd have just as many problems deciding which wood to use for which facing! Luckily, Factory to Customer has put me back on track and convinced me my first decision (walnut) will be right (its the same bass you commented on). Hopefully the pieces I'm looking at will still be available. I totally agree though; every beautiful Alembic I see makes me think "I want one like that"! Interesting how different woods seem to suit different body shapes though (which is another reason I've settled on walnut; I think the Triple O will work better with that wood, although I think I may prefer the standard body shape in maple). Anyway, thanks for your comments and all the best! And Steven, good luck with the Mark King!

Cheers

Wow. It must have been one fun and interesting day at the ABC congress. Undoubtedly worth the price of plane fare!

Dino, you are right. We must convene the ANEC. Drunken rabbits and all. Sounds like a challenge from the ABC doesn't it? Perhaps after the Patriots win the Super Bowl, which should be about the same time we finish digging out from this snowstorm.....

We can even have it at my house too. I'll have to clear the wife and kids out for a day.
Having them at the jam sessions are nice but you really can't "fiddle" too much.
Maybe after the holidays, we can get together. Yourself, Mark Dufresne and Brother Paul the Good One, and of course anyone that wants to join in!!!!

Happy Shoveling

Hi Brother Paul!!!

Yes, the Boston area got buried with snow this weekend. It snowed for 36 hours in some places leaving as much as 2-3ft. It was one of those weekends I was glad to NOT be working. We just relaxed and enjoyed each others company. Remember our "uncle" talk about slowing things down a bit? It was nice to be home!!!

Do you not get snow in your area? I'll send you some, I've got plenty here!!!!

Yes, The New England Patriots are our local American football team.
http://www.patriots.com

An authentic NFL team jersey can run you about $230. You can get the "replica" jersey for about $80. Way too much for a shirt in my opinion.

Talk to you soon,

Brothers Paul (Bad and Fake!?)

That's one of the reasons I like living in the SF bay area (besides being close to the Alembic factory, of course!)You don't have to shovel to get out of your driveway, but if you want snow, it's only a few hours drive away. (ok, probably more that a few when you get stuck in the traffic, but hey!)

Maybe I should start a Bay Area Alembic Club? (BAAC)

Stay warm!

BAAC !?!?!?!?!?!??! DONE!!!!!!!
BTW: it is "Chapter". Sounds more ...huh ...oh ...heavy!!!
Bay Area Alembic Chapter!

mmmm..nice.

You got no wnow ...but those earthquakes and tornado's are not easy to shovel away I guess.

Bro Paul the fake one. Nice site of the PAtriots. I don't understand s()(%^***///"///ˇˇˇˇˇ÷÷÷÷t of that game but anyway. Nice shirts!
But expensive ....a shirt with my lucky number 77 and LINDEMANS on the back goes for 250$ + 80$ transport ....it's always the same ...everything I like is expensive ...even my wife!!! LOL!!!

BUT ..one day I'll be rich and famous! Huh ...oh ... when I'll be 87-something!

Paul TBO,

Actually, we VERY RARELY get tornados...not like in the midwest. The earthquakes, well...we haven't rattled much in the last few months (except when I turn the volume up) but that's the price you pay for the better weather. No matter what, you have to contend with something.

AHHHH Ken!!!!

I love San Francisco!!!! One of my favorite cities. I'd live there in a minute (if I could convince the wife to move back to California). I'd go through a hundred quakes to get away from this cold and snow. I was living in LA the time of the Northridge quake so I know what I'm asking for but...

I have to agree Paul TBO, our version of football is nothing like your version is it!?!? Hockey is probably more related to soccer than our football is huh!?!?

Anyway, I'll be California dreamin' for the next 4-5 months now.

San Francisco is great! We love visiting there. We don't have the snow problem and Jacksonville does have a NFL team, sort of. That would be the Jaguars, Paul, but I would move to No. California in a heart beat. The big problem is the same house I have in Florida would cost about 5X as much on the West Coast.
I thought Belgium got a lot of snow. That idea probably comes from watching the movie "The Battle of the Bulge".

Sam,

If your willing to drive for over an hour each way to and from work (or more) you can get a place that's only outragously expensive...(that's why it took me 'til I was...how old again??...to get an Alembic)

Dino (bptfo) - Hey, I know what your going through...I lived in Philly during the Storms of '77-'78...YUCK!!!! but then again I was out here in '89...I'll take the earthquakes, thanks!!

Ken ... could it be ABAC in stead of BAAC? (I don't know if there's a hidden joke). Alembic Bay Area Chapter???

Brother Paul the John one.
Yeah ...that rich part ...I KNOW money does'nt make you happy but from time to time having money comes in handy ...to say the least.
And that nylon-stockings thing will not help me a lot.

It could sound ridiculous but having an original American football shirt with my name on it have been a dream of mine since my 14th birthday. Why? -I'm embarassed- I was (still am) a huge Steven Stills fan and on his first solo record -on the back of the sleeve- he drives a horse and wears ...a Am football shirt. Since than I realized that it is an expensive thing to own ...well ...it took me 15 years to have an Alembic. The shirt will come too once (no ...I am not keen on horse riding).

Snow?
The earth is warming up brother Sam.
Even now it's everywhere on the news in EU that a lot of EU-wintersport centers are having a lot of problems because the amount of snow is not enough anymore to attract tourists and skiers. That "bulge" thing was in 1943 I think. Aaah-lala ...those were the days! Huh ......oh ...was there a war going on...huh ...never mind ...they could ski LOL.
I've visited the "Battle of the Bulge" memorial in Bastogne BTW. Quite impressive.
That's one of the things about this club I like a lot: you de-mask pre-occupations to people. There was a time that Belgium was worldnews for a very sad children-murder case by pedofiles. I had a an Australian friend who was coming to work in Belgium for some time and he asked if it was save to bring his children!?!?!?!
It's weird: what's in the news is always bad. And what is in the news is what you are.
Sad too!
