This is a very nice Hyak guitar on Ebay except that the original pickups and electronics have been replaced. For one of you guitar collectors, this would be a really nice guitar if shipped to Santa Rosa for some Alembic pickups and electronics and a refinish. A really nice example of a Hyak; and the Purpleheart top and back make it especially nice.

I've been looking at this one. Does anyone know what the standard electronics in these were originally?

Bill; I ran a search and read in this thread a post by Rob (bassilator) in which he says "Hyak electronics function identically to Alembic Series 1 electronics". And in this thread Michael (dela217) says that the Hyak will run on an Alembic power supply. So apparently they were very similar to Series I electronics.

Thanks for the leads Dave, I emailed Michael with some more specific questions. It may be for naught though, as senior management may put the kibosh on this one, especially if I wind up buying a 1953 Martin D-28 that I'm driving down to Monterey to check out this weekend.

They were similar to Series 1 electronics, but closer to Anniversary in my opinion. The Hyak instruments did not have single coil pickups. Also each pickup had preamps and filters for each pickup that were summed together. With Series electronics, they shared the same card, with both channels using the same hum cancelling coil. Very different. Also the Hyaks were not 18 volts, but 36. They took 4 nine volt batteries!!!!

Back in the day, Hyak sold electronics packages just like Alembic does. So, there are Hyak electronics floating around somewhere without an instrument. I bet that would be hard to find though!
