My hands are used to guitars or my old Gibson, but my ears have gotten accustomed to Alembic's sound. My Spoiler's a '78 vintage, has some dings and a stable headstock repair. Looking for a player, not a museum piece. (Message edited by davehouck on November 20, 2006) |

Check the serial number for a correct date on your Spoiler. The first 2 digits of the serial number indicate the year this beauty was build. The Spoiler was introduced in 1980 and the first ones have a narrower truss rod cover (I think pre '84)Take a look at my Spoilers for an example (links are in my profile) If yours has the "Alembic" script under the logo, it's probably post '86 otherwise my guess would be between '84 and '86 Cheers and good luck! Could you confirm the serial number? It starts with the build year, which is probably 87. There were no Spoilers before 1980. |

The control plate looks like my '83. My '87 has a different controlplate. Is that a solid Koa body?(no top) That could indicate this is an older one ('83/'84) But again, the serial number is the only way to know it for sure... Detailed pictures of the repair are also a must if you want to sell/trade this bass. |

D'oh! Def. not a '78-vintage instrument. Not a clue where I got that. The serial # 85 S3715, which makes it vintage 1985. It has a Bubinga top, a mahogany body, and a 3-piece quarter-sawn maple neck. Detailed pics of headstock repair to come Saturday. My seller said the headstock was repaired in about 1999. I bought it in 2003, polished all the brass, put new Alembic strings on it. Consequently the repair is now about 7 years old and shows not a sign of motion. (Message edited by grankin on November 24, 2006) |

OK, here it is Saturday. I have taken pics of the headstock repair from several angles and distances (the last one could be better-focused). Again, this repair was made ca. 1999, and has been stable ever since. The person I bought it from said it had been professionally repaired, and the neck had NOT been refinished. My seller said the "damage" was now only cosmetic ... and I agree. It hasn't moved a micron in the 3 years I've been playing it. (Message edited by grankin on November 25, 2006) |
