I love the sound of my 77 S1. I built a beautiful "Jazzembic" with anniversary electronics with Fatboys. My big hands love the feel and spacing of my P-Bass. Now, now, I know Stanley does it with his shaved down 30 1/2", but I am not Yet quite as talented as he is :-). I don't think any customization of the S1 will make it work for me, I love the sound of my Jazzembic, I love the feel of the P-Bass neck. What's a terribly deprived guy supposed to do? Sell the S1? Use the Anniversary Guts for a custom? |

if the S1 isn't working for you, you may want to sell it to someone who can use it and then use that money to make a p-bass custom exactly as you want with the Alembic electronics you want, jus tmy opinion ~Taylor |

It's the direction I'm leaning towards. I've also thought about putting the guts into my Status Graphite, but I'm better off selling that too. It's tough to want to part with the S1, it's a really sweet tone x infinity!! I would love to hear from people who have put in an ebony neck lamination. |

Marc, If you're going to go with having Alembic build you something, ship them the Anniversary Electronics and have them build you a bass to your specs. As I've said before, my Epic 6 with the Ebony Lams was INSANE. Never had more low end than with that bass. It had a flame maple top, set neck, and East Meets West Electronics. Maybe see about having Alembic build you a set-neck bass with your hand measurements, and installing the Anniversary Electronics in that. If you're going for a set neck, definitely opt for at least one Ebony Lam, you'll cry over the low end every time you plug it in. If you go for a neck thru, have them build you an Essence with a custom body shape (that will fit the Anniversary Electronics) with a custom neck to your specs. I'd go for 2 or 3 Ebony lams, if you can afford it- they're expensive, but worth it. Maybe 2 purpleheart, and one ebony... You're going to have a wider neck (almost the same dimensions as a 5 string, I'd wager) and you'll want at least 3 laminates. Stick with maple for most of the neck, though- these other variations look cool, and I'm sure sound cool, but my guess is you don't want to get overly fancy with what you're doing, and driving yourself crazy over weird neck lams isn't going to help your cause. Or look for a good used Alembic that might come closer to your specs... Perhaps a 5 string that could be modified slightly into a 4? Good Luck, and See you in NYC, Next Saturday!!! Frank |

You could always sell your series and use the money towards having alembic make you something like this which you could use your anniversary electronics in. http://alembic.com/club/messages/395/71522.html This was on sale a while back in the UK. Jazzyvee |

Somewhere in your post is the answer you seek! I imagine that there are quite a few people out there in the Club and beyond who now own some of my "old friends." And I miss every one of them. If you don't HAVE to sell, don't sell. All of this stuff about "I just don't play it anymore, etc." won't mean much when the realization hits that it isn't there/available anymore. I seldom touch either of my currents, but if I ever want to...there they are! And I know that you feel the same way about your S1. If the Anniv electronics works for you, and a P neck works for you, (are you starting to hear it coming), then there are answers built around those realities. Regardless, and due to your history, one day you will want to pick up your S1. Think about it! Harold |

Harold, I hope you realize that you are talking to your NY buddy. Are you slowing down in the South? (HA!) I don't NEED to sell the S1, but I could certainly have it pay for a beautful new custom. Otis, The beauty of the Anniversary Electronics are a)Stereo option, and b) two volumes DO make a difference compared to a pan. I built a previous Bass with an EMW setup and sold it to another Alembic brother. It's sweet but IMHO no comparo. Otis, I'm curious as to why you suggest going with an Essence over anything else? I get confused watching some custom builds in the manner that they are described; is it based on electronics packages? I'm leaning towards a Rogue-based shape, but would like to hear a st neck and thru neck version of similar bodies. I would also like to hear the same with ebony lams. If I can build a neck that I love I have a better chance of getting out to my hands what's in my head. Anyone who can show me more I welcome the opportunity! |

Marc, of course I realize who you were. (I only lost part of my mind!) Because I remember your history with Angel, I took the time to chime in! |

Id sell it and get something that works better for you, maybe put the money towards a custom like others suggested. Ive had a few basses over the years that for one reason or another just did not work for me. I even had one bass that for years was my favorite bass that I have found just does not work for me. It is a 72 jazz, and anymore I just find the neck too fat and the spring spacing too much. |

I have a Dingwall Afterburner I 6 string bass I'm looking 2 trade for an Alembic, I like the Dingwalls just fine BUT I have 2 so I am keeping 1 & parting with 1 I really miss having an Alembic around and I would like 2 have 1 again SO I am looking 2 trade. Can you elaborate on the build info & send pics if interested? I can do the same!!! This Dingwall has a maple body, flame maple top book matched 2 center (whale pool blue), maple neck & wenge fingerboard with 24 frets (novax fan fret system) each string has a different scale length for optimum intonation & tone & passive electronics that sound better than ANY active out there except 4 Alembic of course. This is THE best sounding 6 string bass I have ever heard!! I would rather have a 5 string BUT a series I 4 string is @ least worth investigating Thanx 4 the reply, Cheers Mate!! Stephen |

SO Marco, What U think? This bass sounds like a reasonable solution 4 U, I mean it would suffice the "big hand" dillemma and U could always double duty the neck & finger board as a landing strip 4 ur cessna on when u return home from a long trip lol If U want 2 do a "test swap" I would b more than glad 2 accomodate that. For more details on these puppies check out www.dingwallguitars.com Cheers mate !! |

I wouldn't blame you at all zemog59. I'm in the market for a 4 string. I'll "suffer" with keeping my S1 for now :-) |
