Recently I've become interested in the Waterstone 8-string like this one at Bass NW (though the finish on this one isn't for me). It is rather well made and by rights should come close to the performance of an alembic, but I did not like the sound of the pickups . There are retro fit pickups that will improve the sound. with that up grade it would be a formidable instrument.But it does not come close to the balanced K, alembic made for me. For a little over $350 I am upgrading to a BQS preamp and low impedance single coil PUPs (a 40 JCS in the neck and a 40 J in the bridge). They haven't been delivered yet, but I'm expecting good things. The HZs are probably what most players are looking for tonewise, but I HOPE the new PUPS will get me somewhere in the neighborhood of an Alembic. The bass plays great... it has a nice tight "B".
