Brent, congrats on a very nice bass. One picture looks like the nut is scalloped out between strings. Nice detail. Rich |

Cool bass, great photos. Looks like you found a nice one, well done! How did you get so savy so young? I couldn't spell Alembic until I was 45. Welcome young man, Gary. |

Rich, Thanks a lot. The nut is scalloped out between strings. I didn't know that was different until I looked closely at some of the other basses. Gary, thanks for the comments. It really is a nice bass. Its in great shape too. Haha, I've been playing bass for nearly three years. I started listening to guys like Stanley, Victor Wooten, Marcus Miller, Jaco, and all the other greats very early. My parents are very supportive and know how serious I am about my bass playing and music. I was able to talk them in to buying the bass with some of the money they would spend on my car. I mean, an Alembic is way more important than a nice car right? Brent |

Brent, How would you feel about your parents adopting a 32 yr old brother for you? can you go ask for me? Enjoy the bass and don't forget to tell Mom and Pops "Thanks" on a daily basis...... |

Very nice bass, brent! I talked my mom into getting me my first alembic when I was fifteen, but it wasn't nearly as nice as this. We're definitely extremely lucky to have supportive (and resourceful) families like we do (especially considering i finally talked moms into ordering me a classico!). Congrats on a great bass and good luck, man! Austin |

Brent, if at your age you are listening to those giants, and flying an Alembic, by the time you're old enough to drive you'll probably be buying cars for your parents. BTW, you have just murmured one of the more intelligent things I've ever heard a young person say. " An Alembic is way more important than a nice car." I see why your folks trust your decisions and interests. Stay low, Gary |

Tobin, haha..i'm not totally sure that would work out. My parents weren't too thrilled on the idea. I really am lucky to have such supportive parents. Hopefully i'll be buying them cars in a few years. Austin, your Dark Star bass looks incredible. I've stared at it manyy times. Must play and sound amazing. Brent |

Brent or anybody, I've heard it said that 70's Alembics sound slightly different than their newer siblings. Can anyone elaborate? |

I wish I could, but I haven't played any newer Alembics. Mine really has that 70's Stanley sound to it. I'm sure there is somebody here that can help you. Keavin, that's a nice song. I've never heard flatwounds sound like that. But then again, the only ones I've really heard or played are the ones that come on those Fender fretless jazz basses. |

Early Alembics have the advantage of age, that's what makes them sound different. A well maintained instrument that's 30+ years old will sound totally different from a brand new one, with everything else being equal (woods, electronics, etc). The old series circuits and pickup designs have not changed since then. Also, I find that many of the people who say that our 70's basses sounded better are not really that familiar with our product line and don't understand that they may be comparing an Orion or Excel to a 70s series bass, which of course is like comparing apples and watermelons. Valentino, A poorly maintained instrument that's 30+ years old will sound totally different from a new instrument, too. But this would probably not be characterized as "in a good way". Wasn't there a super-secret mil-spec IC that went in to the early models (used until the supply ran out, since the manufacturer stopped making them)? This was, from what I've heard, at least part of the magical sound of the 70's era instruments. With regards to apples and watermelons: for any two items, there is a comparison that can be made that is simple, objective, and incorrect. Brad |

Brad and Val; I dropped an apple and a watermelon from the top floor deck and they did indeed sound different. |

Yes Dave but if I remember the pictures of your house well you have to admit that they fell on a nicely aged, hippie sandwiched, laminated floor!!!!!!! Paul the bad one |

Brent, I have the sister s-1 to yours s/n 399. Makes me wonder how many can be produced per year. Nice photo of s/n. I dislike digital, I will film and scan photos and add them soon. Michael S. |

Michael, I was looking at your pictures and thinking the same thing. Beautiful basses. The only difference that I see is the back laminate and the body core wood. I'll take some better pictures in a little and fix them up a bit and then post them on here. The glare is annoying. Brent |

Back when I was 16, I hit up my old man for a Series bass several times...all he ever bought me was a Fender Squier Bullet and a carton of Dorals. |
