Hi Jazzy,
yes,i bought a Music Man Stingray 4, STEALTH BLACK of course, with a Rosewood Board and a 3bd eq. Great Bass, but my favourite is still my NYC Sadowsky(Black Swamp Ash Body,Maple Board,Black Hardware, Sadowsky PU's and electronics). A Buddy of mine is building a Bass for me too....
But I'm still looking for a Alembic bass for me,the Spoiler i owned was very close to the perfect one for me,but it did not had the low end i was looking for.....
Greetz,

It's awesome!

I had some worries about the neck profile compared to the classic taper on the Spoilers and Elan 4, but have had no troubles with it yet.
Plays very comfortable (hence comfort taper) :-) and no trouble whatsoever going back to the 32 inch classic taper Spoilers.

Funny thing: The Spoilers do feel like a toy after playing Blackened for a while, that is until you start playing though.

Blackened wins on:

*Sustain
*Versatility – Electronics and the extra string
*Weight – It’s heavy :-)
*Personalized looks

But they all hold their own, love 'em all!

2 jazz and a precision, master volume, 3 filters, 3 q switches, pan knob for the 2 jazz and a pickup selector that add's the precision if i do remember correctly(could be the other way around). so any combination of PU's is possible.

Spot on, thnx Taylor :-)

The only thing I can add is that the Q switches are three way, a great feature that I can recommend to everyone.

Tonal palette is extremely intimidating, this bass houses way too many sounds :-)

If Mica reads this: What are the Q dB settings? (I always forget to ask)

If I correctly recall, the 3-way Q switch is:

0dB (no boost)/6dB boost/9dB boost

Getting used to doing speedy tone changes is gonna keep you busy for a while I'm sure. Those Rcocco strings you recommended sure give a bright but great meaty tone so with that setup you have there it's gonna cut through the music, like moses and the red sea, moving aside anything the guitars and drummer throw in your way....!!!!

I hope you get to gig in the UK so I can hear that bass in action. That said we may be taking a trip to Amsterdam sometime this summer so there may be a chance to catch you gigging then.

For now our only gig is on May 28, no other gigs planned yet...

Be sure to contact me, we can always arrange for a meeting either in Amsterdam, Edwin's bass Connection, my place or anywhere you'd like. (do I smell Euro meeting?) :-)

Hey Flip, Thanks so much for posting the pictures of your case. When I got my case from Calzone the liner looked like crap! They used a single piece of material to line the entire base of the case, so as you can imagine, there were wrinkles all over it & it looked like crap! Plus, all the wrinkles were hard & sharp from the dried glue, so it would have scratched my bass. I sent it back & sent them pictures of your case, & the lady I was dealing with forwarded them to Joe Calzone & because of my complaint & your pictures, Calzone has changed the way they line their cases! She sent me back an email from Joe to all the supervisors in charge of case lining stating that because of customer feedback they were changing their process! I just got my case back today & it looks great! So thanks again for giving me a referance to show them what I wanted!

Cats are so cute, but sometimes... I always keep my shoes out of their reach :-)
Spijker (the cat’s name) is a youngster, just five years old.
She came to me when she was about six weeks old and lives here with her two sons Cliff and Rocky (3 years old) Those two are real rascals! :-)

Rusty: The case came with the bass, I have no idea if they send the bass or just detailed measurements… Maybe Mica can tell you, all I can say is that it fits perfectly and looks great. (as in stunning) :-)

...and now for something completely different:

Blackened on Local TV some weeks ago: Youtube link (audio only, and only the "metal" parts)
Unfortunately, no Mesa's and we were in a hurry, so sound is not optimal (POD for guitars, electronic drums etc...)
Funny nonetheless! (imho)

If yours also will be black: prepare for a long wait, but most of all: prepare for a ultimate looking/playing/sounding beast of a bass! :-)

How are you getting on with the hex screws holding the pickups down?
They use a different method of holding the pickups down to my other basses as these don't have a screw underneath to control the height but just use springs instead.

My Elan 4 has them and they are always coming loose and causing the pickups to move up towards the strings. During a practice session I have to screw them down regularly. I do tend to rest my thumb on them at times and wonder if that is adding to the movement but I think maybe that its the vibrations that's loosening them as all of them come loose not just the one I'm resting on.

Lots of Jazz in this topic :-)

@Jazzboy: Thanks!

@ Jazzyvee: I never really had problems with that, but I play mainly with a pick on the Elans.
I don't like the small surface of the p and J pickups as thumbrest, the AXY pickups on the Spoilers are perfect for that.
You could try some Loctite, should work and is easy to remove (ask about it at the hardwarestore, there are different types of Loctite available)

Well played Flip, you took me down Memory Lane.I still remember hearing Metalica for the first time in highschool. It must have been around 83 or so.I was a big Iron Maiden fan,but also had a hardcore punk streak in me.They appealed to me immediatly. My heavy metal friends (at that time)thought they were too heavy.I loved them.

Thanx!

We did a gig last Thursday, open air +/-800 audience. So I brought my Bass 400 and Strategy with a 2x10 and 2x15 combi.
Worked very well (obviously) but I had to crank up the Strategy (feeding the 1x15's)
Friday we had a huge (for our standards) gig, about 1500 audience. (the gig from the vids) So I brought the whole stack, same as above with a second 2x10. (aka "Wall of deaf mkI")
I forgot to turn the Strategy down (feeding two 2x10 cabs now) As you can hear in the vid, it was kinda loud :-)
There was little drums on the monitors in the beginning + all Mesa's (Mesa MkIII and MkIV for guitars) were relocating a fair amount of air, so there are some timing issues in the beginning...
We did changeover in about 10 minutes (tight schedule, 25 min gig) The band before us used our drumkit, so that bought us some time :-)
No line check, no soundcheck...
But I couldn't get myself to turn it down, sounded too awesome! :-) (though I did back up the treble a bit about half way)
To my surprise, I got lots of compliments from the foh guys and stage manager.

Production was awesome indeed, the lights guy must have been a bit familiar with 'tallica :-)

Edit: Merged the two vids into one: Youtube link
and here's another vid from last thursday: yep, another youtube link :-)

Thanx Jazzy! :-)

I'm still in the experimentation phase with these controls, though I don't change too much during a gig. Live I always have all 3 pickups on, the P adds lot of midrange and make it cut through the mix easier. The filter setting of the P is the most dominant in the overall tone (seems regardless of the P pickup gain setting)

For this gig I had the P Pickup and neck pickup with the filter about halfway and the Q-switch on 2, the bridge pickup filter is about 3/4 open with the Q-switch on 3.
The real experimenting will come in the studio, I can see myself using other pickupcombi's (J/J-J/P-P-P/J-J/P/J) the sky is the limit :-)

I think I will sit down with this bass and the fretless (signature electronics) and explore the tonal possibilities with these multi filter setups in a vid, I will play them through my SWR Basic black combo. (the difference in the settings seem to come out a bit more clear through the SWR compared to the full tube Mesa rig) Stay tuned!

Great photo- looking forward to that video!!

Have you gotten used to the 'springy pickups' with the J/P/J setup? I had gotten so used to the locked down traditional Alembic mounting system that it took me awhile to get used to the P/J setup on the custom Elan I had built.

Sorry Toby, somehow missed yer comment....

Thanx!

I prefer the traditional mounting system because of the solid anchor function, I only play with a pick on this bass so it doesn't bother me too much.

Hey Flip it was good to meet you after all these years of communicating on the forum. Your bass is great and maybe next time i can try your bass at your soundcheck. Just a pity the time was so short. My girlfriend thinks we should come to one of your Metallica tribute gigs. So hope one day to do that.

Now that's officially an Alembic friendly coffee shop!
So nice when you get to meet people in person after being in contact online. Still remember the Alembic gathering in Chicago like a dream, so many nice people all together, did it really happened? :-)

Thanx!

Some picture magicians seem to have that little extra and can come up with pictures like this.

Some sure do: To pull that flame maple grain thru that black tint in this photo DEFINITELY qualifies this guy that he is hitting on all eight. Terrific pic.

But you know, I realize big time players are pretty fickle when it comes to axes and endorsements and all, but all I can think of when I look at this pic is 'and Newstedt passed on THAT for Sadowskys?'

Rock On, FC !
