For any of you who have been following the amazing story that is the Oakland Athletics this year, my son and I have been to four of the last five games. We're going tomorrow afternoon to the final regular season game of the year - winner takes the West title in a one game showdown with the Texas Rangers. WOO HOO! THIS IS FUN!!!!

Hey Bill,

As a Rangers fan I've mixed emotions about this. Still, it's hard to deny what the A's have done to put themselves in this position. It's not how in you start the season, but in how you finish––The Rangers look spent and the A's are surging. I will say this, whichever team wins, I hope they pound dem no-good bums from da Bronx!

Hey! The "Bums" moved out of Brooklyn to LA in 58 or 59. And those guys from the Bronx, who have made the playoffs something like 16 times in the last 19 years are anything but bums given that the team has, by far, the highest salaries (much of them undeserved) in MLB. similar situation to our west coast friends though, they win today (versus the hated Red Sox) and they win the division. They lose and if Baltimore wins, the Yankess will face either Texas or Oakland in a single game playoff. Personally, though I'm an east coast transplant life-long Yankee fan living in the midwest (Minneapolis), I'm sort of hoping for a world series of the recently downtrodden: Washington versus Baltimore.

Slightly off topic here - I'm sitting at work on dress-down day wearing my new 'steal your face' Giants t shirt that I bought at AT&T park when I was in Sf a couple of weeks ago. They had a full wall of grateful dead related Giants clothing / hats/ keyfobs etc. What's the relationship between the dead and the giants Bill?

Graeme
p.s. slightly funny story - we realised by the time we got to SF that our hold luggage would end up well over the airline allowance if we didn't get something bigger for carry on luggage so we bought our son a bright orange Giants backpack which we filled with books / souvenirs / sweets etc. Standing in a mile long Queue at Boston's Logan airport waiting to get through security I was tapped on the shoulder by a security guard who said that as we were giants fans we could use the fast track lane :-)

The Giants have had a Grateful Dead tribute night for the past couple of years. SF is the Dead's home town, after all! On the tribute night, they have a Dead-themed promo item (Dancing Bears or a Jerry bobblehead) and a Deadhead special section. They sell other stuff where proceeds benefit charities of the band members. The gear is popular, and it seems to be at the Dugout Store year round now.

I hope there will be a reprise of the National Anthem by Bobby, Phil and Tim Flannery (Giant's 3rd base coach and musician) for the World Series. Giants always get some great Anthem talent!

I'm guessing Willie is happy to have ANY birthday! I hope you reach that point, too (in a good way, I mean!). Very cool!
