seeing the John Judge superwound ads again on ebay....got me thinking......You've seen the ad, I've seen the ad.... heck, I saw the ads when the came out in the 70s....I didn't know then and don't know now. So who is John Judge and who did he play with? I always assumed he was someone with some noteworthy chops to be in a ad like that (with a bass like that),... I am not an imbecile in music personalities and histories of bands etc, but i suppose it's time to find out who John Judge is. Anyone? | ||

Yes, that's Peggy. I remember reading something about him being currently connected to a recording studio in NC, I think. I don't remember where I saw that but there was a website link. I believe his fame was limited to a specific geographical area somewhere in or around New Jersey. Local band with a local following kind of thing. Sam | ||

That Bass has too much history and notoriety to be renamed "Peggy". It will always have an association with John Judge as HIS Bass. It may change owners hundreds of times, but who's Bass it really is will always remain the same. Like Stanley's "Brown Bass" or Jaco's "Bass of Doom", that's too recognizable as the "John Judge Bass". His design, his Bass - simple as that regardless of who it's current owner is. I apologize for appearing to take such exception to someone calling the John Judge Bass "Peggy". I just find it a little insulting to it's history and designer. Rami | ||

As mentioned above, there have been several threads on the subject. I've met him several times in the last year as my band played a number of gigs at a restaurant/bar that he liked to visit. In fact, he has emailed several pictures that I've been intending to post here for you. | ||

Here are pictures John sent to me, and for which he has given me permission to post here.  John told me several stories; but we always talked while I was setting up my rig and getting ready to start the first set, so I can't really remember most of what he told me. John apparently hung out with Entwhistle a lot when they were on the same tour and developed a close relationship. According to John, his name is on this next ad on the recommendation of Entwhistle.  This next one was backstage at Madison Square Garden.  More pics of a nice Alembic.  One of the bands that John played with was Rick Derringer; I can't remember the others. I don't mean to minimize his acheivements, but often people ask who John Judge is, in part BECAUSE of that Bass. It's become a sort of Alembic icon. The "John Judge Bass". Oliver, if he did say anything about it, I don't remember. My band would get to the bar, set up, and then play for three hours; so when he was there he would come up and tell me all these stories while I was setting up. They were great stories and I wish we were just sitting around a table; so although I was listening to and enjoying all that he was telling me, I was also focused on getting my rig set up. Usually the drummer and guitar player were waiting on me to finish so we could start playing. |
