I truly wish Obama well in undertaking the hardest of jobs. Being a realist, and political cynic (lets face it they all lie, dont they?)its hard to be swept along by the furore but I genuiniely see Obama as the best option for the US. I feel it is more of a massive victory over the totally unacceptable rascist, bigoted attitudes that must be eradicated than any political new dawn or direction - but that is good enough for me and a worthwhile victory in itself at this time in history! Miscellaneous Free for all area - talk amongst yourselves. I have noticed a few tempers flaring here. As it states above and on the link to this section, “free for all area.” Paul (Pas) you probably think this is a Socialist area of the forum because it says free for all…lol. I believe it is okay for everyone to express their views, but we should be able to respectfully disagree. If you don’t share Bill’s sentiments, that’s okay. He started the thread and had every right to do so. I don’t see where anyone turned this into a political debate until you began your sarcasm. Many of us will never meet face to face. So, the miscellaneous area is where we get the chance to chat about all topics, including and excluding Alembics. I come from a long line of conservative Republicans; Kentucky overwhelmingly voted for McCain. I always thought of him as too liberal personally. However, I am not going to attack Bill or other members of this family just because I disagree with their politics. With all that said, GW has sent us to hell in a hand basket. McCain did not prove his point to me that he could bring about any change. He threw every piece of garbage out there to try to get something to stick. It backfired on him. Instead of setting up a platform and selling us right minded thinkers (tongue in cheek Bill) on it, he attacked his opponent with a bunch of blanks. My advice to McCain would be: don’t tell us how bad this guy is; tell us how good you are. He just didn’t deliver. I think we can all do a lot of Monday morning quarterbacking at this point. But, I am willing to give this guy a chance. I am poorer now than I was 8 years ago. I think we can all agree this is going be a very tough assignment for any President. America spoke clearly and concisely, what was going on had to stop. i doubt anyone thinks obama is the messiah as pas calls our president to be. i thought one of the more interesting things i saw last night were sore losing republicans at mccains speech. mention obama and boos rang out. at the obama speech a mention of mccain brought almost no response. The republicans can thank bush for one thing. he helped destroy the party as we know it. The only category mccain carried was voters over 65. As far a socialism and obama are concerned. when the top 1% of the country grew their wealth over the last 8 yrs and the rest of us went backwards and/or lost our jobs,saw our quality of life retreat,saw democracy reduced,saw our standing in the world decimated, then something is wrong with the direction we were headed in. pas you make your living as an investor. if your making so much money that you MAY end up paying more in taxes to say improve education, improve the infrastructure, improve health care for those who have no access to it, to give others the access to the things you have. I dont see it as a bad thing. Spreading the wealth? not necessarily. spreading the dream - definitely. The problem as i see it is that the republicans tried to tie socialism to communism and that was a fear based move to create votes. It didnt work If i end up having to pay more taxes. So be it the difference between republicans and democrats is simple. democrats tax and spend-republicans borrow and spend. this is why our national debt has doubled to 10 trillion in the last 4 yrs after being left a 5 trillion dollar surplus 8 years ago. So now we are in debt to other countries like China. The one person who worked hardest for Obama was none other than george bush! finally inebtitude has been rewarded. if you think this isnt a democracy anymore i feel sorry for you and all the other boneheads who dont get it, never did and never will. its not about YOU its not about ME its about US as they said in star trek- sometimes the needs of the many outweigh the needs of a few | ||

I'm better off now than I was 8 years ago and the government had nothing to do with it except for staying out of my way. I don't buy the hype around Obama. If he brings people together then more power to him, but until I see that, he's just another politician who played the game and won. If he makes people feel better about themselves, that's fine too. But we'll see how people feel a few years down the road when nothing really changes. The rich will still be rich, the poor will still be poor, and we'll see how many of us still have jobs. Well said New2 and Flax. You just engaged in a thoughtful and respectful discourse. This is really what is missing nowadays. People can disagree but should't take it so personally. As far as those at McCain's rally, booig Obama, don't forget the Dems acting likewise for Gore and Kerry. They booed as well. Why does one look at the other side's house before cleaning their own? All political people are guilty of overemotional cheering and booing. We need to get back to the thoughtful exchange of ideas. What about the extreme left or right right that have used the radio or the internet to wish death to those who oppose their views. This disturbes me more than anything else. I'm a fiscal conseravtive, and social issue moderate, but I appreciate that so many new voters accepted the responsibility to vote. I hope this is not just a one shot deal; our vote is by far the most precious thing we get as citizens. My feeling is that Obama is extremely bright, I just disagree on his approach to many matters. That does not mean the issues he raises are not relevant, it's more a matter of do you use Tylenol, aspirin or a prescription to cure your headache? I also own a small business, and know that you cannot build a business from the bottom up, because there are only so much in resources you have. My only hope in continues and is not connected to who is running. Finally, I prefer to share wealth with those who at least attempt to contribute to society in some fashion rather than just expect the governmnent to subsidize them. When you get something for free, you do not appreciate is as much as when you pay for it. There is no constitutional right to a big screen TV or an Alembic, much as we all would agree on the latter. Now I'll go back to my Alembics, and the other toys. May America prosper and find ways to advance our freedom and lifestyles! | ||

I didn't start this thread as a political statement. Notice, my original post had no partisan content. Rather, after the problems with vote counting that went on in 2000 and 2004, and all the rhetoric of the past two years of campaigning, it was good to see a lot of people come out and vote and have their votes counted, regardless of who won. The thing I am proud of is the process, not necessarily the outcome. (I'm not complaining about the outcome either, it is just irrelevant to the point I was trying to make). I'm especially proud of the advances this country has made - from the abomination of slavery all the way to the reality that a person of color can be elected by popular vote to the highest position in the land - all in about 150 years. That's demonstrable evidence that the system can work. For that I am proud. That's enough for me, at least until January 20th. Bill, tgo | ||

Just because this is the Miscellaneous section we do not have the right to talk about anything we wish. We do not own this board and are guests of the Wickershams. Moderator Dave has outlined expected behavior in the Posting Guidlines. In particular this, "- Avoid using language that others may find offensive. Other people will find offensive, remarks that are degrading sexually, that are ethnically or racially oriented, that are patently political, or that may present some particular religious view. Many people find vulgar language to be distasteful." While I don't see anything overly political by the OP it obviously was by other people. I feel one of the things that has kept this board civil and friendly was the lack of partisanship that has become so prevalent in the US. It is best that we keep it this way. On a personal note I to am proud of this election. After many years of apathy and non-voting by our citizens this election has brought many people back into the process. It has always been my opinion that the only way for a democracy, in any form, to stay healthy is to have as many of its citizens as possible actively involved. Carl, I'm offended by your apology, what now? ;-) I too would like to apologize. Of all the things wrong in our world, and don't get me wrong, I still see so much that is positve, but of all that is amiss in our modern culture, the current state of "political correctness" drives me nuts. People are way too easily offended in our society. That being said, I fully understand the danger of faceless communications, like web forums and blogs, and I have been the indirect target of numerous flat out falsehoods, posted as truth, on some forum or blog. Seeing as how I respect this place, Alembic.com, so much, I never initiate any controversial threads. But when I see stuff posted, well, let's just say I went to great lengths to tone down my responses. As I often remind my boss, well yes, that's what came out of my mouth, but you should've heard what I didn't say. The problem for me is, that for the last eight years, I have, in the interest of self preservation, had to suppress an astronomical degree of frustration, anger, disillusionment, disbelief, and sadness, just to make it through every day. I don't think I realized just how much I was suppressing until last night. It's everything I can possibly do to keep from bursting joyful noise from every pore. I can only imagine this must be what it feels like to have terminal cancer go into remission. That's how big it feels, to me, right now. So while it's true that my recent posts may not be in line with the letter of the law here, in a day or two, I'll come back down, and return to posting about Wishbasses, or how I love my set neck Epic, as much as any Series owner loves their bass. Sorry I'm late. Keith, thanks for the Posting Guidelines reminder. Looks like your reminder has helped to calm things down. For many Americans, and I gather for people in other countries as well, no matter which candidate you were hoping would win, the outcome caused a visceral emotional response. There were supporters on both sides who had an enormous amount invested emotionally in this election. At this point, it would be very easy, if unintended, to deeply hurt someone right now, as those on both the winning and losing sides are emotionally raw right now. As moderator, and given my own past and present experience with discussion groups, and given comments made on this board and made directly to me by email from club members, I think holding this place, our little place here on the world wide web, as a refuge has significant value. This is alluded to in the posting guidelines, and I've mentioned it in a few prior posts as well. As much as I may find statements about "free speech" to be reasonable, and as much as I may find compelling the idea of sharing with and learning from our friends, the potential costs to our community here seem to me to be too great. I do realize that, no matter which side you were on, yesterday's outcome does have many people emotionally buzzed right now; and I thus find it highly understandable that one might feel compelled to post and respond about it. That said, I would like to humbly and most respectfully request, especially in light of what some of you may have been through, that each of us pause and breath and give due consideration. Thanks. Wow, If you have friends and want to keep them, don't talk politics. Now, lets see what develops and what happens over the next 4 years. Will taxes on all go up? Will there be another terrorist attack on US soil? Will our 2nd amendment rights be taken from us? Will the sky begin to fall? Are you Jewish Bill? My wife, and consequently my son, are both Jewish. (I ask just out of curiosity, I'm not trying to throw religion into a political thread on a forum where both are banned). I guess we had a shot at a Jewish VP with Lieberman, but we all know how that ended. |
