I recently offered to help a "lady" load in her gear for a gig at a friend's pub. Big Mistake. I got the third degree about being a chauvenistic pig. And if she actually needed some help, she would have hired a crew of girls because there is no man worthy of carrying her gear. Of course, this was Santa Cruz. |

Hi Everyone. I just wanted to update the haps, so I copy/pasted my latest newsletter. Begins. Another 'flash gig' this Friday, August 3rd at Coastal Coffee Inc. cafe/shop in Kingston, WA. Start time is 7:00 til I get tired of playing. This is a new venue which is 'experimenting' with having live music. If you're not gigging, or have other plans, it would be great to see some familiar faces. Not to apply any pressure mind you but, the more people who show, the more success this 'experiment' will have which could ultimately result in another venue for local performers. Well worth the time for the 'big picture', not to mention getting the opportunity to hear my latest material. ;) Located at the intersection of Miller Bay/Hansville Road and Highway 104 in the 'Albertsons' shopping center complex. Coastal Coffee/Cafe 8208 NE State Highway 104 STE 104 Kingston, WA 360-297-3326 For something else, I'll be playing at a benefit for an injured employee from Tizley's EuroPub this coming Thursday the 2nd. Start time is 6pm and will easily go as late as 10:00ish. A most worthy cause as she has no insurance, not to mention she's unable to work. Tizley's EuroPub 18928 Front St. Poulsbo, WA 360-394-0080 On a related note the open mike at Tizley's is still running strong, every Wednesday, 8-11. ;) Hope to see you there. Best Regards, Kimberly Lynn |

Hey Everyone. Another 'flash gig'. Casa De Luna Of Poulsbo 18830 Front Street Northeast Poulsbo, WA 98370 6-8 Friday. Another gig that's never had live music and, if all goes well with my performance (which it likely will ;) ), I'll be back on Saturday, same time, same place. Undoubtedly the easiest gig I've ever booked, as my 'reputation' preceded me via word of mouth from friends and employees. An introduction, a statement of desire to play my music, economics, setting the date and time, bidding each other a great day, nice to meet you, see you soon, out the door. I kid you not, two-three minutes total elapsed time. Ahhh...were they all to be so easy. If anyone's in the neighborhoood, pop on in. It would be nice to meet another Alembic owner and the opportunity to see/hear a 'budding' bass soloist? Priceless. ;) Best Regards, Kimberly PS. The benefit from a couple of weeks ago raised a bit over two grand. Not too bad for six musicians and four hours and even better, the timing was just right to help them through some hard times. |

Hi Kimberly; I'm curious. What's your set list like; and how long is your set? |

Hi Dave, nice to hear from you. So..."What's your set list like; and how long is your set?". Tough question(s) in a way because while the tunes themselves may 'be the same', the 'content/arrangements' can change due to circumstance of having a crowd, or not having a crowd, or as also often has it, my mood. ;) Celestial tinklings e.g. 'Breezin' by George Benson can be five minutes or less, or it could be ten minutes or even more. For example last week started slow and there really weren't very many people there so I was just killing some time and 'playing around'. 'Fifteen' minutes later it ends having used different synth voices to 'break it up' and the employees/management and the few people there loved it! An example of something that has been known to happen. ;) (One of my strengths is improv and I have to be careful to 'not' play too long.) Anyway, add a verse/chorus/bridge or not, all crowd dependent determines the song/set length. To continue to answer your question, my YouTube videos capture the 'essence' of what I do pretty well. Somewhere Over the Rainbow, Vincent by Don McClean, 'Something', 'Across the Universe', 'Here, There, Everywhere', 'Do you want to know a Secret' by the Beatles, 'Little Wing' Stevie Ray version and 'Classical Gas' Mason Williams make up most of my 'stand alone' material with just bass. With the looper and synth, 'Got Blues?' is a crowd pleaser especially with the synth saxophone, trumpet and organ voices, not to mention the 'lead bass'. 'Can't Hold Out' by Clapton, a fast 'Kimberly' swing, a 'Kimberly' boogie woogie, 'Low Rider' War, 'American Woman' Guess Who, 'Voodoo Child' Hendrix, a Phil Keaggy 'Salvation Army Band' groove, a 'Kimberly' funk groove, a fast 'Kimberly' country 2/4 (Bass Boogie), a 'Sweet Georgia Brown' shuffle, She's a Woman, Beck/Kimberly version, slow blues, fast blues, medium blues, 'Kimberly' rock grooves, 'Kimberly' latin grooves etc... Length of the set can and will also vary based on crowd, or lack of. Last Saturday I played an hour and 25 minutes before taking a ten minute break. A couple of weeks ago I played an hour and a half set. All dependent upon whether the crowd is 'hot or not'. About a 35 minute set is probably the least amount of time I've ever played. The gigs I'm booking are usually based on two hours with the first set at an hour followed by a 10-15 minute break. But, if the crowd is 'live' I'll play 'em for all I can. And I hope this answers your questions. Pauses for breath and bids adieu. ;) Regards, Kimberly |

New videos. 'Didgeridoodoo' A clip taken at the Global Bean Coffee Traders 11/09/07. While warming up prior to the gig and looking for a different flute voicing, I 'stumbled' over a didgeridoo in my Roland GR-20 synth. After a bit of 'noodlin' around with a didgeridoo rhythm, a blending of flute and bass voicings and a little help from Carlos, 'Didgeridoodoo' was born. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSn3qfv0_ng 'GrooviE' A clip from Friday 11/09/07 at the Global Bean Coffee Traders in Silverdale, WA. An 'E' groove using an RC-50 looper with a bass and 'guitar' line looping and accompanying a lead bass melody. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kxcGNxDEemY 'FunkAy' A clip from a performance at the Global Bean Coffee Trader in Silverdale, WA taken 11/09/07. A tune with three looper parts (bass and two 'guitar' rhythms) supporting a lead bass melody/solo. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xbR7OVoTiPI Best Regards, Kimberly |

Last two videos from the Global Bean gig 11/09/07. 'Got Blues?' A 'study in evolution' comparison with the previous version from my first solo gig in January '07. Taped at the Global Bean Coffee Traders in Silverdale, WA 11/09/07. A twelve bar blues using two looping parts and one synthesizer voicing for the "Moody Sax" solo section. And of course stand alone bass for the lead melody/solo sections. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0uLPlMJcGY 'Keaggy Groove' Inspired by Phil Keaggy's 'Salvation Army Band'. Another study in evolution from the previous version captured from my first solo gig in January '07. Taped at the Global Bean Coffee Traders in Silverdale, WA 11/09/07. Three looping parts, one stand alone Alembic bass and yours truly. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJ6NKw-4N6g Kimberly |

I love the "Got Blues" piece! The sax part is nice. By the way; the audio/video quality of these latest videos seems much nicer than the previous vids. I'm guessing it's a combination of better lighting and better camera placement. Both the notes from your bass and the smile on your face are much clearer. In fact, these last five videos really show off the very nice stuff you're doing with your plucking hand. I'm really enjoying watching these videos! |

Hi Guys. Hi Paul - I was rather bemused when I came across the didgeridoo in my synth, but interestingly enough it was kinda easy to feel that 'natural groove' and run with it. The rest is as 'they' say, history. Hi Dave - Seems like I'm sending a lot of thank you's your way, not that I mind. I agree with this latest batch of videos being of better quality with both audio and visual. In looking back to 'the early days' I'm somewhat disturbed at the poor quality of both the audio and visual. However, for historical record etc, I feel an obligation to leave 'em there. I'll try and see about getting someone to get close ups of my plucking hand 'in action'. You'll see it's a unique 'Kimberlyesque' style, if for no other reason than being "digitally challenged" and now that I think about it, 'upside down'. I'm sure you also noticed I'm playing a lot of closed string harmonics here of late using my thumb as the mute. I'm not sure if I can even play any more without using that technique, as it's become such a habit not to mention fun. (Especially when I 'hit one' just right and it just sings. I love my Alembic.) Back on topic, I'm really glad you're enjoying my 'stuff'. Bottom line, I'm having a gas. Best Regards, Kimberly |

Hi Guys. I just booked into a new venue which takes me 'across the water' (Puget Sound) and into what's known as the 'Eastside' (a corridor of small and not so small towns and the small city of Bellevue on the eastern side of Lake Washington, pretty much suburbs of Seattle, though industrialized and commercialized as with most peripheral areas of metropolitan areas these days). Anyway... ;) Saturday - January 12th, 2008 8:00pm-11:00pm The Three Lions Pub 8115 161st Avenue NE Redmond, WA 98052 425-284-3399 http://thethreelionspub.com/thethreelionspub.htm Gonna be interesting. It's an English pub format which is as they say is, "A comfortable, quaint English style Pub, where you always feel at home" If anyone's in the neighborhood... ;) Best Regards, Kimberly |
