Hey Dave. You know, it's still kind of a shock to me I'm gigging as much as I am as a solo bassist and I have high hopes and strong indications I'll be gigging even more in the new year. My first anniversary is the first week in January and to say it's been an interesting year is very much an understatement. I went into my first gig with 14 songs, a lot of heart and strong improv skills ;). I'm runnning about 45 tunes now with about half of them originals. It's no exaggeration when I say I'm having the time of my life musically as a solo bassist. I think more importantly is I'm 'living proof' it can be done without being 'world class' so to speak. To date I've inspired at least a few other bassists to at a minimum entertain the thought of becoming a soloist. I wish you all the best. Happy New Year to One and All. Best Regards, Kimberly | ||

Kimberly, your example is certainly inspiring. It appears that I'm changing my approach in that I've started practicing on my six string. I'm thinking that some of the things I am working on will be a lot more interesting if not confined to four strings. There will be a learning curve, I get lost fairly quickly on the six string, so it will be a while; but that's ok, learning is fun too! | ||

Very cool Kimberly. I've thought about trying some solo gigs but there's just not many venues for that in my area. Dave, try taking ONLY your 6 string on a few gigs, this way you have to play it. Thats how I made the adjustment on playing 6 and 8 string. Yea I made some mistakes but it I had to learn to "swim or drown" so to speak. Happy New Year folks, Olie | ||

Olie; to get more specific, I need to get together with Mica to address a problem with one of the saddles on my six string before I can take it out of the house. And ideally, I'm looking to pick up one with a classic taper neck instead of the comfort taper I have now. But yes, you're right; at some point I need to get out of the house and just play. | ||

Hi Dave - We've got to stop meeting like this! :D Best of times with your sixer and I hope you get the saddle problem settled quickly. I remember switching to my 'fiver' from my four and had the same issues with 'getting lost'. Six boggles my brain, though I have to confess to thinking about a seven. ;) I need to run to Bass Northwest and check out the Conklin they have while it's still there. It'll be the first time I've ever tried playing a bass with more than five. I really wonder about the neck width issue. Anyway, when it's time most likely I'll go with a custom Alembic six. It just seems like six should be plenty enough for me. Brings to mind, what's your tuning? E-f? E-e? B-c? B-b? ;) Olie - Dude, I am so sorry I didn't schedule the time to get together when I was in Louisiana earlier this year. Truly a regret. For sure, it's a done deal next time through. Promise. If I might make a suggestion? Work some material up and then find yourself some open mikes. Sure, people will look at you strange when you say you want to play solo bass. Matter of fact, you can count on it! :D But. Your instrument and your music will speak for you! That's when I've found the 'light goes on' for just about everywhere and for everyone I've ever played for. I can't tell you how many times I've heard, and this is nearly verbatim because it's about the same every time. "I couldn't/didn't understand what the big deal was about going to see some bass player until I heard you play". S'truth. Many, many times I've heard that same thing. And as I've said myself many a time, one of the biggest challenges for me is the 'education' of the club owner/manager/public in general, that being a solo bassist doesn't mean playing a bass solo all night long. It's the getting in the door that's one of the tough ones. The gigs are there, you just have to educate/show them that they want you. ;) Anyway, (hypothetical question) ;), how much more 'pure' can your music and playing your instrument be, then when playing as a soloist? Major, major sweetness and high, high coolness quotient. It's also rumored it could be addictive. Kimberly, Very nice. I've always enjoyed the clips you have put up on Youtube. I was wondering about your gear setup. I bought a Jamman looper this past year (largely inspired by the stuff you do with a bass and looper). I also play Epics (I have a 4 and a 5). I have found that my sound is a bit muddy when I have 2 or 3 things going. Do you just make sure you don't do different parts in the same range or do you change the EQ settings on the different parts? I see you reach down occasionally and adjust something. Any suggestions for me? Rich BTW, I really liked the "sax" sound you soloed with. | ||

Hi Guys. Thanks Dave! Just between you and me, there ought to be a law against having so much fun. ;) I'm not exaggerating when I say my soloist project is exceeding my expectations. It's been an interesting year to say the least. Rich - Heya, long time no see and thank you. To try and answer your question, (congrats on the JamMan btw), have a seat and let me first establish my setup. My looper and synth patches are 'tied together' via midi, so if I select patch #50 on the looper, the synth tracks the looper patch selection and changes to patch #50 also. So, I have my synth patch numbers matched up to my looper patch numbers, with the appropriate synth voice for the tune, to keep button pushes and knob spins to a minimum. Cool? In this video I believe I first changed my synth patch, as 'Coppin a Feel' is patch #50 on the looper and the sax/synth patch I used is on patch #29, so I had to manually change the synth patch from #50 to #29. I can do this via the midi controls on my bass, but as it would take 21 pushes of a button, it was quicker to reach down and 'spin a knob'. As I said in the previous paragraph normally I'd have the patches matched up, but as this was an 'impulsive/improv' sax solo, I wasn't prepared in advance. So, I went to patch #29 on the synth to play the sax patch/voice I wanted and then I believe I bumped the input level on the looper up some to bring the sax volume up some more. Whew, it's so much easier to do then to explain. No prob though. Realize most of the above applied to this video only. ;) I remember when I had my RC-20XL I'd have a problem that sounds similar to what you're describing. What I'd do is record the first loop a lot hotter via volume control on my bass. The second one would be a little less 'hot' than the first, but hotter than the third loop etc, etc. ;) After doing it like this I kinda got a feel for volume settings and adjustments and it did help in keeping the first parts 'coming through the mix'. The hardest part was remembering to keep turning the volume down for each new looper part. :D On my RC-50 looper I have three separate channels/phrases I can record on, each with an individual/independent volume control, as well as an overall master volume. If I'm 'prepared' I'll have the volumes set to do as in the previous paragragh, with the volumes matched with each other without having to make adjustment. I believe the JamMan stacks each part on top of the previous one(s). Major difference between the two loopers, if I'm correct. However for me, I'm generally not that 'together' so I *do* find myself adjusting individual channel/phrase volumes to keep them balanced. This is most likely what you've see me doing when I'm reaching down and doing something or another. ;) I don't have any EQ control on the looper itself just as an FYI. It also helps to play your parts so they happen at different times in your groove. In this video (and on some of the others I've done), you can see/hear ;) how I'm doing this with the first two parts as I put down the bass line and then the 'guitar' part. The third part is built around the first bass part and the second guitar part, but as you mentioned in your message about different ranges, you'll note it's one octave higher then the bass part/first loop. And I think that answers your questions and as always I'm happy to try and help as best as I can. I'm only sorry I can't seem to keep it less wordy and easier to follow. This one's a good location for all you Seattleites and Eastsiders being right in the heart of beautiful downtown Redmond. Saturday February 23rd, Tizley's EuroPub - Poulsbo, WA An opportunity to play my material at my open mike hostess venue, expect with the added benefit/bonus of instead of my usual 'play 30 minutes/open the open mike', on this one I get to play for two hours. Sweet. And lest we not forget and since I'm on the subject of Tizley's, my hostess gig at the open mike is now in it's 56th week and been extended indefinitely. Every Wednesday 8-11 and highly recommended. ;) Seriously, you should get there early as it's been standing room only the last couple of months. Good people, good venue, good music and I hear there's some 'crazy a$$ed chick bass player' that lays down some serious rumblin'. Hi Mike, Sorry to hear about the lack of 'decent' venues in your area, that's really gotta suck. Glad you like 'Sassy', thank you. It's nowhere near being as 'free spirited' as when I play live, but I'm pretty pleased with the results, even though it's going to be remixed. Less effects, minor tweaks, it'll all be good. Anyway, I put too much pressure on myself trying to 'keep it together' when I recorded so I didn't dare try any 'flash'. Maybe as I gain more experience... I'll see if I can't send you a copy via email if you like, as I didn't want to make it 'available' online just because it seemed to be a good idea. It won't be the first cut, but will definitely be going on my CD. My next time in the studio is going to be on the 19th. From the last session I've got seven tunes recorded with about 38 minutes of material, with three more tunes to record and a couple more I'm still working. Time it's all over I should have close too or a bit more than an hour of material. Just 'for the record', here's the CD title. 'Laying on the Bottom, Playing on the Top'. This took me a while to decide that it makes sense. "Laying on the Bottom" is kinda like "laying on the mustard"; so, in that regard it makes sense. A bass player who stays below the seventh fret and never touches the G string could be said to be "lying on the bottom"; however, when she gets a groove going, she's laying down a nice bassline. Two kids share a bunk bed; one's lying on the top and the other's lying on the bottom. The neighbor has a double decker hen house; and yes, some are laying on the bottom. Two humans are sharing a single bed; neither is laying on the bottom. And no, I haven't been laying on the sauce; nor was I lying in wait for an opportunity to bring this subject up. And no, I haven't been laying it on thick; and I certainly haven't been lying about it. But I have been lying around some this evening; and earlier I was laying up groceries in the pantry. | ||
