My dream Elan would be a Europa 4 string, Elan body + headstock. Flamed maple top, maple body. See thru black finish, Black hardware (I can't wait to see the black hardware on Charles' Custom Dragonfly)and side leds. I've owned an xtremely worn Spoiler from '83 (trying to get it back) Before I sold it I had planned to give it a refinish. I wanted to recoat it black allover and go to the powder coater where I used to work to do the hardware, also black. I would have given the bass new Black schallers.. but It's not mine anymore... I put the Elan in the quote generator this was the output: NECK FEATURES 4 string 6600.00 Right-handed 0.00 Long scale 34 inches 0.00 2 Purpleheart neck laminates 0.00 Ebony fingerboard 0.00 Fretted 0.00 Comfort fingerboard taper (wide bridge) 0.00 Mother of pearl ovals 0.00 No front LEDs 0.00 Side LEDs in red 1100.00 Elan inline peghead 0.00 No peghead bevel 0.00 BODY FEATURES Flame maple top 0.00 Bookmatched top 0.00 Maple body 0.00 No back laminate 0.00 Transparent gloss color finish 250.00 Elan body shape 0.00 Tummy and elbow contour 0.00 HARDWARE FEATURES Bronze logo and script 0.00 Bridge block 0.00 Bird tailpiece 0.00 Brass truss rod cover 0.00 Brass backplate (for model electronics) 0.00 Polished brass hardware 0.00 Black Alembic Gotoh machine heads 0.00 Black strap locks 0.00 ELECTRONICS FEATURES Europa/Rogue electronics 0.00 Total Price Europa Quotation 7950.00 Sorry to say, but I'll have to wait a few years before I can afford it. But someday it will be mine! Cheers! F.C. |

Order when monthly special is free LED's, subtract $1100. Add case for $305. You're at about $7100 retail. Figure in normal dealer discount. Then call Valentino and place your order. It's that easy. T |

Great tip! Cuts the price for ebony neck lam's in half, that would also be great on a black bass! Still will be around 2010 before i've got that amount of $$$... |

FC I'm with you- I love the Elan. I'm very seriously considering having a 5 string built sometime in the next six months- almost exactly like the wineburst 5 in the showcase section. Unless I find something else soon, I'll probably go with a tobaccoburst or sunburst finish. I too am looking at going with the Europa/Rogue electronics. Did you see the Elan 4 that was up for sale in the Sale section here on the board? Good luck, keep me in mind if you happen to find a Elan 5 floating around Europe somewhere. Toby |

The one from dwmark? I'm the European guy mentioned in the first message. 'Sadly' I just got the Spoiler then, still searching... n.b. the Elan you mentioned is beautiful and I do like the 5 strings better (the looks) But as you might have seen in my for sale/trade thread about my 5 string Fender I'm no five string bass player... Cheers! F.C. |

Sounds like a killer bass, FC. Although, you don't have to wait to see black hardware... http://www.alembic.com/info/FC_hill8.html |

FC Yes, I was referring to the one from dwmark.....I'm glad you at least got first crack at it! I'm one who bounces between 4 & 5 strings and I'm currently without a 5. If I can get an Alembic 5, I'm pretty sure I won't miss my current 4 string very often. It should be the medicine I need to push me to the 5 full time. Toby |

I'll slip this in here.....it seems relevant enough based on how much I like the Elan body style and am since I am considering it for a future custom (3-4 yrs out). I know that what I'm about to propose isn't a traditional Alembic look, but I'm wondering how an Alembic inspired Jazz bass might come out. There has been some discussion of Alembic basses which reflect the Fender Jazz bass style, and the Elan is a beautiful interpretation of that body style- Here is one of the more recent threads discussing it. Just wondering about the possibility of having an inlay on the front (ebony perhaps?) that follows the pickguard lines on a classic Jazz. It could even have a lamintated inlay w/ a beveled edge that reflects what you see on multiply pickguards.... I totally understand that this is NOT traditional Alembic look, but the Alembird has got me thinking about the possibility of an Alembic Jazz. Any opinions? |

Tom, I linked that thread about halfway down my post- I was more curious about opinions on a wood inlay on the top to reflect the pickguard. Thanks though! =) Toby |

Hey Toby, Here is something similar in concept, if not execution, to what you're wondering about. |

Charles, I did see that one as well and was going to link it in my post up above, but decided that 3 hyperlinks was too much. =) I know the inlay would be no problem- I'm just wondering if I'm insane for thinking it would look good. The more I think about the pickguard, the more I like it. If I could get a flame/tiger stripe maple top (bookmatch to center) with the amber tint to it and an ebony pickguard inlay, I'd probably flip my lid.... That would rock. Talk about understated magnificence! I like the multilaminate bevel idea, too. They could do it no problem. With a slightly thicker maple bottom laminate to fit in the recess, then vermillion, maple and ebony lams slightly raised and beveled...mmmmmmmm! Or how about a quilted cocobolo top laminate for the tortise-shell look? You've got an extra kidney, right? :-) |

I've got two kidneys- Dialysis is time intensive, but it would give me more uninterrupted practice time. I was even thinking that a real busy burl amboyna or burl redwood might give that tortise shell look. If I could get a tobacco burst Elan w/ a tort or black faux pickguard, I'd give both kidneys and a liver!! EDIT: speaking of tortoise shellish- how's this? I imagine that would give you a killer reddish tort look. ooooh the options. amber tinted maple w/ black, tobaccoburst w/ black- tobaccoburst w/ tort..... I'm right there with you man...I actually looked at that bing piece and some amboyna and redwood burls right before posting. I think the quilted cocobolo on THIS HEADSTOCK would be the absolute ultimate faux tortise, though. It's late here on the East coast... Have a great day! |
